Does not look good for Geno if reports are true:
1. Geno Smith has made $3mm in the NFL in 2 season, including a $2mm signing bonus and was due another $500k this season plus almost $300k roster bonus. Through this season Geno is slated to make over $4mm over his first 3 season. IK Enemkpali? He is a second year "roster bubble" player who made less than $500k. Nothing to sneeze at but once you considered taxes and costs for training and the year put into his craft which will almost certainly be a short career he certainly isn't "set" or a "millionaire" as some have reported.
2. QB's are quasi-management. They are protected, both on and off the field. A smart, franchise QB realizes the precarious divide they straddle and would know they owe their teammates the utmost respect and consideration as they are all commodities easily dumped.
That said... sounds like:
Geno borrowed $600 from Ik
Geno refused to repay Ik the money he borrowed
>> This was a big no-no for Geno. His privileged position dictates, as a good leader, he work this out.
Ik confronted Geno (we don't know if Ik took an aggressive posture...)
Geno got in Ik's face (retaliated?) and wagged his finger said he won't get his money back
Ik is obviously being disrespected at this point. Geno ripped him off and was flaunting his status--what recourse did Ik have to get his money back? Ik could possibly be cut whereas Geno makes more money, is pampered, and is walking all over him.
If this scenario is what took place => Jet's need to cut bait with Geno Smith.
If this is true I don't care if he looked to have potential at the end of last season, he obviously lacks the sensibility and leadership skills required to get his teammates to rally behind him.
A franchise QB needs to carry himself better. Seattle saw this last year when anonymous teammates said Wilson wasn't "black enough." That could have tanked the team. It is obvious that in Seattle not everyone likes each other. Baldwin/Tate were dissenting about Harvin the week he was traded for yet Richardson and Matthews continue to go on record saying Harvin was a great teammate and the only vet to help them out early on. Conflicts happen, people don't like each other. But there is a fine line of dislike and disrespect.
Geno clearly doesn't understand he should never, ever threaten his teammates, let alone a bubble player. A team is 53 players. I couldn't imagine the rest of the team rallying behind Geno after treating Ik that way. They may not like that Ik hurt the team and be mad he took it too far (could even be prosecuted) but it sounds like that Geno is not viewed as a victim and instead solidifies the conclusion that he is a loser and want him gone.
I cannot say I blame them.
