I liked PK because the action was non-stop. The AI did leave a lot to be desired, but so did the AI in Farcry. There was no thinking involved with PK. No frustration, no puzzles. If I wanted a puzzle, I'd empty 1000 pieces out of a box and go to it.
Doom3 flat out sucked. Run, run, run, run, OOooooo, something jumped out at me, splat. The same boring crap for hours, disguised in different scenes. It reminded me of country music. Nothing ever changed.
HL2 is more like an RPG/FPS than an FPS. Yes, the strategy and puzzles make the game more of a mental challenge. If I want a mental challenge, I'll play chess or argue with the wife.
I like the FPS genre because it's straight forward. UT2004-straight forward. Call of Duty-straight forward.
Looking around for a hidden valve that you have no reason to believe exists is not my idea of fun. Shooting, blowing things up and trying no to survive is what I enjoy.
But hey, I always thought D&D sucked WAY back in the day. My kids are Sims inclined. I'd rather go to the dentist than play that game 😀
I do enjoy hl2. I'm amazed by it. I think it's a huge leap forward, and I'm happy I bought the game.
Take out the puzzles, add a heaping helping of gratuitous violence and explosions and I'd love it forever.
