I am only short a CPU and video card for an entire sytem with all the extra parts I have lying around, so I am thinking about replacing my current CPU and video card to complete another system for resale.

I currently have a 1Ghz AXIA T'Bird that overclocks to 1.4Ghz+. So, if you were going to upgrade this CPU (keeping in mind it runs at 1.4Ghz stable), where would the sweet spot be in terms of the most bang for my upgrade buck. I have not been keeping up with the current batch of new CPUs so if there are any steppings I need to look for to ensure a good overclock, please mention that. Tx.

Most Xp's are still good overclockers, not as good as the good old 1gig Tbirds but you should be able to
squeeze 100-200mhz without a problem. As of right now I think the Xp 1700+ is the best bang for the buck.

You can expect more - about 400 mhz tops for pretty good stability, though you will have to do 'plastic sergury' (unlock the multiplier). You have to have a good board (EPoX 8KHA+ coupled with an Alpha 8045)

I have a couple friends who have overclocked their 1.4GHz AXP's to 1.67GHz on air cooling stabily.

With the current AXP's, I'd expect about a 200-300MHz overclock. The 1GHz AXIA's were the best ever, you shouldn't expect that great type of overclocking from the current crop of AXP's, wait for Thoroughbred if you really want to crank up the overclocking.
