My PIII CPU just died, so I'm gonna upgrade to P4 1.6a. Where's the best place to get P4 1.6a CPU that has a high probablity of overclocking right now? I missed the bandwagon back in February. Which production is better costa rica or malaysia? All I want is 2.4 gighz, and I'm gonna bundle this with Asus P4B533 mobo and samsung 2700 ddr ram.

Yeah I'm looking at those 2 vendors right now. I'm gonna get my Samsung ram from Newegg, since there are reports saying googlegear.com doesn't sell genuine samsung on samsung RAM.

So there's still high chance of overclocking from these new batch of P4 1.6a right?

it all depends on the luck of the draw.

intel prices all 1.6a equally, no matter where they came from, be it costa rica or malaysia.

buy the retail box from the cheapest place you can find, and pray to god you get one that overclocks well. Most people will get one that overclocks fine, but you'll probably need better cooling to get 2.4 at good temperatures.

BTW: how did you kill your p3 cpu? did you overclock it and run it too hot?

Actually, it's my uncle PC. I've been helping him for a month trying to get his PC up and running again. The problem is that it if u go to the BIOS it freezes every so often. If u leave the PC off for a day, the next morning it would boot up fine, but after a while will freeze again, reboot and nothing. He rma'ed he's mobo, hd, and changed the PSU and Memory, video card and still the same problem. I'm thinking it's the Heatsink not having a good contact with the CPU, and causing it to overheat, but he told me it's fine. I'm doing tech support across the country via my cellphone, and he's not so good with computer components, so he told me to forget it and buy him a new CPU+Mobo+RAM. It was due for an upgrade anyway, he has a PIII 700mhz cbo that never had any success overclocking to 933mhz (the last good Intel overclocking combo back in the days)

I'm about to order his components tonight, CPU and Mobo from newegg, and Samsung ram from zbuy or memplus.
I'm just researching more about Asus P4B533 in the meantime, making sure it's a good board.(any recomendation on a different board)

If you're overclocking that 1.6A, get the ASUS P4B266-C mobo. No on-board sound/lan/etc. A proven board for overclocking the 1.6A.

What was it formally?

I just made this purchase, listed from gogglegear:

ORDER CONTENT:
2 x (240256) Asus P4S533 SiS 654DX P4 (Northwood) Skt478 DDR333 ATX MB @ $106.99

1 x (1.8A-512) Intel P4 Processor (Northwood) 1.8GHz, 400FSB, Skt 478 @ $183.

1 x (1.6A-512) Intel P4 Processor (Northwood) 1.6GHz, 400MHz FSB, Skt478 @ $128.

4 x (80032) Corsair CM64SD256-2700CX2H 256MB PC2700 333MHz DDR DIMM Memo @ $88.

I e-mailed the tech, and the CS was 25%. He/She gave me like a one word response. I was kind of pissed off, but they have some of the best prices from a reliable seller. I was going to purchase a bunch of stuff from OCsystems, but a friend fowarded me to a BBB post :(

Good Luck

:) :)

link26 is correct. Buy the cheapest Retail box you can find, because in the end the inside should be perfect.

However when it comes to customer service, shipping times, and the general idea of being treated like a valued customer...this is best obtained from newegg IMHO.
