There are several choices out there. Direct TV being one of them, can't remember ther rest. But quality is great with any of the digital TV systems

I have Dish Network, and I love it. The quality is great, and so is the CS. But if your a football freak, DirectTV is the only one with the Sunday Ticket.

Oops, almost forgot to add this. When you go from cable to satellite, you want to check with the company. Some of them will not give you affiliates (NBC, CBS, etc.) unless you get a signed waiver from your local stations saying it is ok.

He shouldn't need local affiliates. I don't know about Ogden, but down here in the valley you can get the local stations just fine with an antenna.

Anyway, Fsh, I have DirectTV. Runs me $75/mo with ALL the movie channels. Next step up is $85 (I think) which includes ALL the sports channels, minus the Sunday Ticket, NBA League pass, etc...

You can get the local affiliates on DirectTV, but it costs another $10 a month, or so.

I got my system from Ultimate Electronics. My friend and my parents got their systems from Circuit City. They are all probably about the same. My friend just got a new RCA receiver ($90) (his Toshiba died) and it is really nice. I still have my old (one of the originals :)) RCA receivers.

buy the iridium network...they're going to bring them crashing down anyway, because they don't have a highenough bidder for the satellites (68 of them i think)...what a bunch of assholes

$75 is one of the premium packages. Check out DirecTV for more details. I pay $35/month, and get more channels than cable, plus the "family" package (A few more kids channels, and some more home improvement channels.)

Plus the quality is way better, cable companies suck, and DirecTV doesn't censor what you can watch (a la UFC on pay-per-view).

SirFshAlot,

<< you know anyone that has received it? >>

well I will if you order & receive one ;)

It does have that "too good to be true" aura about it, but otoh if you read on their site it says they get some kind of "finder's fee" for scavenging 1st time DirecTV subscribers or something & that's how they make their money. I will check back on the boards I heard about it to see if there was any negative fallout.

OK, in our own hot deals forum we find this thread about the same deal, sounds like it works as long as you keep it for minimum ONE full month otherwise out $200.

Also found what appears to be a bargain on Dish Network + 17 gig HD.

well, I got mine today, and it wasn't too hard to hook up and activate.

I wish I had never seen the pay-per-view porno sites. There goes my VISA.

I got the whole shebang shipped to me for $34. I'm getting the basic 40 channel package for $21.99 a month. Installed it myself. Direct TV that is...Basic Cable is over $40!!!

I started out with the basic deal, but when I found out that I wouldn't be able to watch the historic F1 race at Indianapolis on Sunday, I upgraded, plus added the Showtime package. Total cost is only $45/month. Way better than cable. Plus I like the features of the receiver for customizing channel lists for me and my daughter.

A bit off topic, but...

Comcast is the largest cable provider in the Philly area. It bought controlling stakes in the Sixers and Flyers and will not permit the home games to be carried by the dish providers. If you are a hockey and/or basketball fan, you are forced to subscribe to the higher-priced cable services to get these games. This sucks.

I am not one who agrees with too much government meddling, but this is one of the unintended consequences of communications deregulation. In the bad old days, broadcasters (including cable) were restricted from monopolizing the supply of content.

Interesting thread. My lawyer asked me last week if he should get satellite for his tv AND computer downloads. He also wanted to know if satellite was as secure as cable for his email. I told him none of it was secure. PGP was about the only chance of securing his lawyer-client txs. Does anyone use DirectTV for their ISP? I've heard horror stories....
