I'm looking to buy a bench and bar and some weights. what are some major nationwide stores where can I find a really cheap one?

How much are you looking to spend? Do you want cheapy rinky dink walmart stuff and plastic plates or are you serious about getting some tough equipment?

wiseass answer: eBay

real answer: sports authority -- bought a nice "small" set there and they've served me well for years

Play-it-again sports, or similar used athletic equipment store. I've seen some pretty good benches at the one near me.

I bought a ton of stuff from PIAS a couple weeks back. Prices were unbeatable and they have quality stuff if you want to pay for it (it's not all used equipment!).

Newspaper classifieds work as well. MANY people buy nice weight sets and then never use them. I bought my Weider bench and a little over 200 lbs of weights for $100, and everything is in near perfect condition.

You could try Fogdog. They have a lot of stuff on clearance, 50% off shipping for some of the heavy stuff, and there is a coupon for another 15-20% off the clearance items (I may be wrong on the size of the discount).

the cheapo benches don't hold much weight & the posts are usually
too narrow for olympic bars.

This place has killer benches
that are used in powerlifting competitions.

you can frequently find olympic bars + plates for sale in your local newspaper
by people who discovered that weightlifting was not for them.

IMHO, you're better off joining a gym - you pay less & get more.

oh yeah I just remembered since I'm in Venture Crew I get 20% off everything at some place called SportsCo. I wonder if they have weights

it was awesome a few years ago when all the internet companies had free shipping and you could order weights and the UPS guy would not be happy but atleast he got a free workout. now shipping costs more than the weights

Walmart to get started with iron weights, and a curl bar. I went to Champs for single 25lb disks. Screw the leg and "fly" parts of the benches. The hinges rarely line up properly with your joints. Use squats and free weight flys if you need to. Most important is learning antagonist muscles and how to keep them balanced. Weight lifting can be the best form of excersize or the worst if you don't know what you're doing!
