XP uses check disk, not scan disk. To check your disk: Go into my computer, right click on your drive and go to properties, then select the Tools tab, and click "check now" under Error-checking. You can also run it by typing chkdsk at the command prompt (type chkdsk /? to see command line options).
yeah, but I had a dying floppy disc and I needed a surface scan to salvage the files that weren't damaged. WinXP could see the disk and tell me it had an error but it could do nothing to help. I ended up scandisking it in my other system, that runs win98, got the files I needed and brought them back to the WinXP computer.
