Yea man the zombies are coming,I am good for 12GA defense ammo,just want some sidearm love.
Every gun is a little different, even same make and model. Two buddies have 10/22's they bought at the same time. One will not run remington golden bullets, the other loves them.
My remington 597 hates winchesters in general while the rugers will run them fine. All three love the federals.
All the ammo mentioned here is the bulk 550 par box stuff.

in fallout 3 i have almost 1k rounds of 10mm. im having a hard time keeping .44mag in stock tho.

It's a niche round.
That is a nice price on the Federal. Probably not full-house 10mm rounds.

A lot of ammo is becoming harder to get or just plain expensive.
I am having a heck of a time finding 7.62x51 for the M1A1 and Model Mohawk 600. It's getting close to $2/cartridge and the bulk boxes are getting pretty weak in reliability terms.
A lot of the USGI is drying up quickly.
Bulk .45 ACP is getting up there too.
8mm Mauser (NOT the corrosive Yugo military stuff) is getting thinned out as well.
7.62x25 is still available in large doses (corrosive/berdan primed & Non-corrosive/boxer primed).
Reloading FTW!!
I have reloaded about 300 rnds 8mm mauser for a fraction of the cost to buy an equivalent number. It can get a little tedious, especially when cleaning/trimming the cases.
Only have done about 100 .308 with another 400 cases and bullets.
.45 ACP will be next on the list as well as the 7.62x25 TOK for the CZ-52

There's you rproblem right there. 😉 Seriously though, the first .22 rifle I bought was a Marlin Glenfield Model 60, and it jammed constantly no matter what I shot or how clean I kept it. I ended up selling it and getting a beat to hell 10/22 from a pawnshop and haven't ever regretted it.
You're not going to find any surplus rounds for 10mm, as they aren't a NATO round and haven't been used in any wars. The closest thing you'll find are recalled rounds that didn't meet the manufacturer's specifications and that are re-marked as practice ammo, but that is not a consistent nor bountiful source.
I had bought 2000 rounds of recalled Speer Gold Dot .40 S&W from Ammoman several years ago. At the time I paid $189 / 1000, but now they've more than quadrupled in price! This is due to both increased demand as well as dwindling supply.

You really dont need 10mm. 40's are just as good and a lot easier to find.

That depends on what he's using the 10mm for. For defense against humans, I'd say you could effectively replace 10mm with .40 S&W. For defense against small bears, mountain lions and the occasional zombie, you'd want at minimum a 10mm. I'd prefer a .454 Casull, personally.
