Where's a video player that displays the frame number?

I'm looking for a video/movie player that displays the frame number of the frame shown. Must be free. The stupid thing is, my old computer under Windows 98 had one that does precisely this, while my new laptop under Windows XP doesn't. Or I haven't figured out how to make it appear.

I believe the old one to be Microsoft's old mplayer.exe (precursor to current Media Player), but I'm unsure about that. At any rate, I just need a player that will show the frame number that I'm at. Any suggestions?

Do you need it because you want to know the frame number as you're watching or you just want to know the frame number to use that frame for something else? If the latter, the virtualdub shows it at the bottom.

Well it's mostly so I can know what frame I'm on so I can look at things frame by frame. For example, if I wanted to count out how long something takes. I also sometimes do other stuff with it (eventually want to make an animated gif out of a portion of a video) but that's more rare.

It's just odd because the old version of mplayer has a better feature (i.e. frame number) than the current version. Not to mention, you can scroll frame by frame; it looks like Media Player doesn't do that. Microsoft has a habit of removing the useful features or something.
