My younger bro is looking to open a checking account but is not sure where to do it. He is in So. Cal but is also considering an internet bank. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? Sign up bonuses (like Gomez.com) are always nice too.

you should look around your area to see which bank is more convienient fot him. if he is a minor, some banks offer special advantages. also, if he's going to use a checkbook make sure you find a bank that has free checking(they're everywhere these days).

Safeway Select Bank is actually a good starter bank, completely free checking, with a somewhat quirky online banking system. They also HAD 5% interest savings accounts but boy did that change. I switched to BofA, not so free, but they are the only bank along with Wells Fargo located on campus for me.
