Just curious...

I just returned from a week-long trip in the area to visit my girl. Im originally from North Jersey, but ive been living/goin to school in Florida since 90. I love the city, but i know its real expensive. Anyone have any places in the vacinity (or even in the city) to reccomend? I have a year till i graduate but im pretty set on moving to the area...

Thanks in advance...

Hoboken, NJ

Why?

*Access to NYC:
The PATH train goes into the city and costs less than the subway.
You are comfortably tucked in between Lincoln And Holland Tunnels
Plenty of Buses

*Cheaper Rents:
Not exactly cheap, but much cheaper than NY

*Ability to have a car
Cheaper insurance and easier parking

*Nightlife
Hoboken has a thriving nightlife. There are at least 50 restauranst/bars in the square mile town.

You can live on the jersey shore and take a ferry to work. About $25.00 per day.

The Jersey shore ferry is more expensive cause its further away.

You might want to check out places along River Road in Edgewater and Fort Lee. It's pretty convenient and a quick bus ride into the city. I heard the Path trains are a nightmare now because of 9/11.

New Brunswick: <45 minutes
Newark: 15-30 minutes depending on traffic

The ferry I am talking about goes from the atlantic highlands, I think if you buy monthly passes it is a little cheaper...You can get a kick ass condo right on the water in the 1500's...

Rutherford, NJ <--I live here

What will you be going to grad school for?

you have the option of taking the train or the bus to NYC.

The bus takes about 45 minutes to get to 42nd st/times square ($2.55 each way, but you can buy a monthly pass). I have never taken the train so I can't help you out there. 15 minute drive.

We also have the 76 that goes to newark and drops you off right in front of the Rutgers campus in Newark ($1.55 each way) 30 minites for the express 40 minutes for the local. 15 minutes of you drive. I'm a Junior there now. So if you move to my town we can hang out for about 5 minutes before I find something wrong with you ;)

It's a safe town to live in. We have a Shop rite, rite aid, a couple of liquor stores, 4 banks (Bank of NY, Fleet, kearney federal, and boiling springs), 4 elementary schools, 2 high schools (1 private 1 public), Felician college, 5 different curches, and lots of restraunts. I'm leaving out lots of stuff but I can't remember anything else to put in.

for 1500 you can get 3 bed 1 bath with gas included. Apartment or house (depending). You can get the same thing cheaper in the surrounding towns (Rutherford has the highest land taxes of the immediate surrounding area).

It's a geological oddity. Whatever we don't have in town you can find it 15 minutes away.

The population here is 90% white, 5% asian, 2% indian, 2% hispanic, 1% black.

Manhattan: Upper East Side - Cheap rent, nice places to hang
Manhattan: Upper West Side - Trendy, expensive
Manhattan: Lower East Side - Coming together after being a slum for decades
Queens: Astoria. It's the new "up and coming place"
Jersey City: Hoboken - Access to PATH, nice view of Manhattan
Brooklyn: Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens - Nice places, decent rent

I live in Dumbo myself, which is in Brooklyn. It's a trendy artsy place that is waaayyy too expensive.

My Zany's 2000 guide says for Hobroken:

Studio: $620
1 BR: $800
2 BR: $1,300
3 BR: $2,200

Then again, this is the same book that says I can get a 3 BR in Brooklyn Heights for $1,800 -- riiighhhtt!

EDIT:

I was paying $1,400 for a 1 BR in Jersey City in 2000. But it had a killer view.

If your dead set on living somewhere in NYC and actually thinking about doing it soon, the Financial District is a hot spot for some good deals. Lots of the buildings down here are lowering rents like crazy (keep in mind that its mostly luxury buildings around here though) b/c of the recent disaster. I managed to snag a $3400 dollar/ month apmt w/ 3 of my other friends for $2200 per month. Great view of the waterfront, on the 34th floor, laundry on the floor, Health club in the basement and doormen and the like to sign for your packages for you if you work or go to school. Its more expensive that living in NJ or in Brooklyn or Queens, but these are probably some of the best deals you'll find in Manhattan.

Awsome! I go to stevens now :) You don't go here for chicks, no sir ;)

Our furrent m/f ratio is somewhere at 5:1

I don't know about rents around here, I live on campus. I think its pretty good 'cept for peirce (the dining room). Just be sure to bring some (like a sams club size) tums ;)

I like it here. Its hard, but its worth it, IMHO.

Hey, I lived in Rutherford & area for a while - one of the best-kept secrets of the NYC area. Easy transportation to Manhattan, reasonably priced. Not even remotely trendy.
