Where's a good place to find mochi in the U District (Seattlites!)

My GF says the Trader Joes Mochi is the hippy style mochi and not the "good" mochi.

The best advice I have is take the 71,72,73 down to the International District. But barring that here is a microwave recipe though I can't verify how good it is.

Mix: 1.5 cups Mochiko four, 1/2 cup sugar, 1.5 cups water, 1/4 tsp vanilla. Pour into 8x8 pan. Microwave on high for 9 minutes. Cool. Coat with katakuri (potato starch?). Cut and coat again.

If you do make it let me know if its any good.

where in the ID? i know uwajimaya (sp?) has it, but it is the same kind that trader joe's has... which is also the same kind carried by several other asian supermarkets (not as whitewashed as uwajimaya). so i dunno *shrug*

I saw some at the staterbros here.
If you want real mochi, go to an asian supermarket. Real ones don't have ice cream in the middle and is left at room temperature, not chilled. You usually dip it in this peanut powder.
Red bean mochi + peanut powder = mmmmmmm...

To be honest I don't remember where in the ID except Uwajimaya, though I'm fairly certain I've seen it elsewhere down there but its been a long time since i've gone down there. I personally don't like the stuff.

I'm talking about the technicolor room temperature stuff. My GF claims trader joe's doesn't have it but maybe she's just nuts, its happened before 😉

There is a Teriyaki join in Factoria (Loehmanns Plaza, next to subway) that had all kinds of japanese treats inside, including Mochi. Not exactly UD, and I don't know if it was the hippie kind or authentic. Pretty sure it was red bean inside tho....

Red Bean. of all the ones I've had they're the best...
I don't care for green tea and ice cream is just silly.
