Whereforartthou, Mobility x800 XT?

So ATI recently released the Mobility x800 XT. This is the 16-pipe version of the x800 aka the "M28", so the XT version is codenamed "M28 Pro". This looks to be the top dog in in mobile GPU's, as we see here at Anand. The GPU is also showcased (in the same Alienware Area-51M 7700) on page 50 of the latest (July '05) issue of Maximum PC.

However, in spite these high-profile reviews, this laptop does not exist. No Alienware system listed on the website contains this video adapter. After A.) An online chat with a customer support rep, B.) a phone call to Alienware technical support and C.) an Email to corporate HQ produced 1.) a rep who denied any of their systems featured the card, nor were there any known plans to 2.) a fruitless conversation about the (irrelevant) current features of the laptop with a non-english speaking tech rep and 3.) no response to my email, in spite of the auto-reply stating that I could expect one within 24 hours...well, suffice it to say I'm not impressed with the company.

The sad thing is, I bet I get better information on what's going on from this forum than I do from the company itself.

Alienware is crap, and some other custom computer companies will probably come out with it soon, if not already out. But why not the dell xps gen 2?

The Gen2 looks to be a nice system, but the x800XT is simply a superior part to the Go 6800 Ultra in the xps. Dell gets some nice gaming performance out of the 12-pipe Go by bumping up the Core and Memory speeds very high. They compensate for all the heat generated by this OC'ing by using a 2.0 Ghz mobile CPU. Personally, I'd rather have the 16-pipe ATI part and run at default clock speeds, giving me some thermal breathing room to throw a 3.0+ CPU in there.

I've never been able to find one, on their site. Could you provide a link please? I see they have the 12-pipe non-XT x800, but that's it. Only one that actually has a shipping laptop with the part that I've found is Rock PC, in the UK.

You talk about Alienware being crap and then say XPS Gen 2 at the same time!? If Alienware is crap, then dell is worse!

juliet was referring to romeo's name. SHe was actually asking why romeo had to be romeo, since she was in love with romeo, but her family was enemies with romeos family. So basically, she was saying a name doesnt mean anything and was talking about how romeo would be the same person she loved if he went by another name (thus making him come from another family).

I think the point here is that Alienware is crap for the money. They are generally overpriced for the quality, service, and support you get. Or so I hear

I think the following can be said of vendors in general today: Customer Service, Quality Assurance and Tech Support have all been cut back to the bone in favor of a fat advertising budget and price competition. The rule is poor customer service, bad response times, incompetent, arrogant or apathetic techs, outsourced non-english-speaking call centers and so forth. This has been my experience with 95% of computer/it/networking vendors. Dell has been no better than Alienware (I owned an Inspiron once upon a time). Alienware seems to be a one-time decent boutique vendor that got too big for it's britches and joined the rest of the accountant-driven, bottom line clones.

Occasionally I will find an exception, usually a new company still focused on building a client base and thus more motivated to provide good customer service and build quality.

So far the only company actually shipping mobiles with the XT part that I have found is Rock in the UK. I have yet to have anyone show me a shipping laptop with the part in the US.

This is correct. I spoke with someone from RockDirect a few weeks ago and said it would be shipping around now.

Well, considering Dell owns Alienware I would say they are equal! You are just buying intoa namebrand when you buy alienware.
