where would you go for a week and a half?

so, I've decided I want to go on vacation next fall, after all the craziness from moving is done, even if it means going on vacation by myself (because my friends are all either married or poor). I haven't been on a real vacation since entering the work force in 2003... I think my last vacation-vacation was spring break 2003 when I rented a house on the jersey shore for a week with some friends.

I'm totally at a loss for thinking about where to go to, though... any suggestions from wordly ATOT'ers? I'll probably have like $3K to blow after moving expenses are all taken care of.

I definitely want to go overseas. I've been to Paris, Rome, Florence, and the French Riviera before, so I'd probably want to go somewhere new. love museums, sight-seeing and shopping, but a bustling nightlife scene isn't something I'd be particularly into, especially not if I was by myself.

Oh I had some ideas but they all involve south america and snorkeling. I don't know anything about travel in europe. I would suggest a hostel in eastern europe.

I'm not sold on Europe or anything... open to any suggestions, really, but I'm not an outdoorsy guy.

I've always wanted to go to Sydney, Australia. That would be my top pick. My second would be Vienna. My third would be Moscow.

haha... we were in Cape May, which is a far cry from Seaside Heights.

I've always wanted to go to Sydney, Australia. That would be my top pick.

My grandmother has done a bunch of traveling over the past 15 years and she has said that Sydney was maybe the most beautiful place she has ever been. I would like to go there some time myself.

I usually go camping in a state/national park or neighboring country (canada or mexico) for a week to week and a half vacation. Nothing like disappearing for a few days to rejuvenate myself. I do it with my wife or a small group of friends.

If I had $3k for a trip for myself, without a doubt I'd head to Alaska on a "field trip" that one of the teachers in our school organizes annually. But, there's no way in hell anyone else is going to touch what they do for 10 days for just 3k.

I've done quite a bit of travelling myself - Ireland, England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Mexico, Jamaica...

My personal opinion is that a week and a half is not enough time to go to Europe...never mind China, Australia, etc that are on the other side of the globe.

With a week and a half of time, I would be looking to go somewhere that is no more than 3 time-zones different, and a max of 7 hour flight.

3 time zones wouldn't even take me out of the US and I probably won't be able to take more than a week off at one stretch until I retire... but I spent a week in Rome and felt like I pretty much exhausted the city (ditto for the 4 days I spent in Florence).

My vote is for Aruba. Perfect weather year round, plenty to see. If you get bored you can hop a flight to Bonaire or Curacao, or even Venezuela (you can see Venezuela from Aruba.) Very safe and clean.

Lots of things to do - lots of ship wrecks to snorkel or scuba, a good bit of shopping in Oranjestad as well as a few small casinos. Aruba is one of my favorite places. Also - best beaches ever.
