Where would be the cheapest place to get a replacement dvd drive?

ifixit and powerbookmedic are pretty reliable sources. If you can go external, then crazy go nuts, but bear in mind that it might not work natively with DVD player or Disk Utility.

If you don't want external, the recommendations that TheStu laid out for you will be your best solution. I take it you will be replacing the drive yourself?

I will try, the model identifier is macbook 4,1

Also will ddr 2 667 ram from a pc laptop work or does it have to be mac specific ram?

I never bought Mac specific RAM for my MacBook and I upgraded its memory twice.

The older (think G3s, early G4s) ones were finicky about RAM timings which was why it was recommended to get the Mac specific stuff, but these days it shouldn't be an issue at all.

It is less of an issue now, but here are still some timing issues with ram. One set of PNY said it would work but we had to swap it out for some Kingston ram because the PNY did not work.

That model has an MiniIDE optical drive. Make sure that you do not purchase the SATA optical drive that comes in the latest MacBooks.
