I have recently relocated to a new area and I am trying to decide which place to rent. My choices are:

#1: Apartment complex w/ detached garage - Typical cookie cutter apartment with white walls, beige carpet, basic appliances, etc. About $100/mon more than option #2. Upside is that it has a garage and is predictable. Downside is that it's boring and maybe the projects thing (see below). This one is about 8mi (15 min) from work.

#2: Converted NY style loft - ~100 year old factory building converted into 2BR lofts. Brick walls, exposed wood beams in the ceiling. Brand new kitchen w/ granite and stainless steel. Also has nice view of the river and is close to a little downtown area. The downside is I'll have to keep my motorcycle outside. Upsides (aside from cool space) are utilities are included and comes furnished so I don't have to move all my crap that is currently 300 miles away. This one is about 1mi (5min) from work.

#3: Multi-Family Home w/ 2-car garage: Nothing too special here. About 100 year old house with some upgrades, but still kinda basic. rent is about $200/mon less than #2, but utilities will be high because of old construction. Fairly close to downtown area with some potentially cool places to eat. This one is about 8mi (15 min) from work.

Assume all locations are in pretty safe areas. However, #1 has some projects about .5mi away, but the community is gated and I'm told by locals that the project-people stay in the projects.

So What Would ATOT Do?

How important is a garage to you? You have a bike, but do you need a garage for a anything else

Nope. Garage would house bike, that is about it.

I should also mention that #2 does have a reserved spot right in front of the door to the building.

I like #2. All utilities included? That sounds pretty good. The furnished and really close to work would seem like added bonuses.

What's the size on all of them? Are any significantly bigger/smaller?

If you have the money, #3, just do repairs on it. Right now may even be a good time as I'm sure the goverment must be giving grants or tax breaks on stuff like that. (they are here in Canada, not sure about the US)

RedSquirrel, I am renting. So not fixing up anything :)

#3 is the largest. #1 and #2 seem similar in size.

#2 includes all utilities except cable/internet (which I doubt would really count as a util except on ATOT :) ).

You don't want internet included. You'll get some crappy 1Mbit DSL connection.

Also a good point. But yeah, utils included are just the normal ones (water, gas, electric)

I'd say #2 but since you have a bike you really should have a garage to secure it in.

$100 says that bike will disappear within a couple months if you chose #2, go with #1.

Number 2 sounds cool and interesting. With utilities included and cheaper, its a better deal too. If you like the furnishings, it seems like a clear winner.

The bike thing is scary though. Perhaps #3 is better since you get a garage.

That's my one fear. However (and I know this sounds bad), I have full coverage on the bike.
