I had just started high school (9th grade) and I recall they announced it over the PA system.

I was outside watching it happen, 4th grade. I lived in Merritt Island FL.

Alot of friends had to move shortly after because of layoffs. Sucked for the spacecoast area. Good thing my mom and step dad didnt lose their jobs.

I was walking across campus around lunchtime thinking about how hungry I was. As I cut throught the MSC and exited I noticed the sandwich shop in the building and decided for the first time ever I would go in and have a bite to eat. O got my sandwich and coke and went to one of those pillars with a table built around it and pulled up a stool. I noticed that everyone was watching the TV which was showing the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger. I remember saying to myself how fortunate it was I stopped in to eat at just the right time to catch the launch and a few minutes later..........

OT to the thread but was nuclear war with the russians a big concern for high school students at the time?

I was in first grade. The elementary school had called a school assembly that day, where the entire student body and most of the faculty gathered in the gym to watch the launch on video monitors set up by the school. The school thought it was a part of history, and wanted everyone to see it.

Needless to say, the assembly was cut a bit short... :(

I was at home sick watching the "Price is Right" when they cut in with the news. I believe I was in the 4th grade.

9th grade health class... there was an announcement over the PA.

I also remember where I was when Regan was shot. At my grandpa's house watching TV in the basement.

I was in high school at the time. I think my school had an administrative half day or something (unless I was cutting class). I remember being in a comic book store at the time with a couple friends, when the owner said the shuttle had exploded. Our first reaction was "Shut up! That's not even close to funny." Then he turned on the radio and we heard the news for real. We ended up going to the nearest guy's house and spent the next couple of hours glued to the TV. I can't believe it's been 20 years. :(

6-years-old. Maybe in first grade? Saw it at home on TV. I remember pointing to my mom that there was a "fire" that was not suppose to be there, referring to the one coming from the side of the SRB.
