Where to stay in New York City?

Going up to NYC with some Colombians, so they aren't wanting to spend 350 a night. Anything wrong with staying across the line in Jersey? I'm trying to find somewhere that is decently priced but that isn't infested with sewer rats. Any help?
 
Priceline is your friend...I got 3-4 stars 2 weeks ago for $150-175 a night, comfortably housing 3-4 people.
 
There's a holiday inn north east of NYC, easy access to subway. a junk yard in the back for drug deal that goes bad.
