I used to do the a/c work at the Yankee Clipper. Nice enough hotel and also the only one that is directly on Ft. Lauderdale beach. Hop the wall and you are in the ocean. Like I said, its nice enough.
Also they might like Pier 66 it is on the Intracoastal waterway and has some of the best views around. It is only a block or so from the beach, but the views from the rooms are fantastic. Check out the website and do the virtual tour or slideshow. Also this hotel has a revolving restaurant at the top. Very fancy.
If I was to choose I'd do the Pier 66. I lived down there for 17 years and I know a lot of other hotels in the area, but not too many compare to those two. Now, since I moved they have put a bunch of newer properties across the street from the beach, but you said that they want to be directly on the beach. Yankee Clipper fills that bill, but the Pier 66 is just plain nice.
priceline! both the yankee clipper and pier 66 are participating hotels...i booked 2 rooms @ $90 at pier 66 about 2 weeks ago...very very nice hotel.
edit: one caveat..if you do it via priceline, you won't get to stay on the "tower" part of the hotel but the surrounding lower levels...not a huge deal but fyi.
