Most of the Caribbean is made up of third world countres with varying problems.

Gotta say, that's top 3 on the "most ignorant statements I've heard all week" list.

It is? I've been to most of the islands in the Caribbean. Most of them, if you leave the tourist areas (and some of them even if you stay in the tourist areas) have crime and poverty rates that make the worst inner cities in the US look down right civilized.

And the constant begging and hawking of worthless crap they do just gets on my nerves. I'm on a freakin vacation, not a Red Cross charity drive. On many of the islands, step off the boat/plane and you have rude pushy people screaming at you to buy their crap. On some of the worst, you step off the boat/plane and you have hookers and drug dealers pushing their wares.

By contrast, Hawaii is a much nicer, calmer place to visit. And far more beautiful. Most of the upper Caribbean is constantly stripped of foliage and/or under repair because of hurricanes. Last time I was in St Marten it was a barren dirt pad. Hawaii, on the other hand, is always lush and green. And in Hawaii, you can leave the resorts and tourist areas without fear of being robbed/raped/killed.

Yes, you are quite correct. parts of hawaii are somewhat poorer as well, although i never once felt threatened while in HI. There are nice islands in the caribe, but when we were in Nassau, we didnt leave the main street.

It just depends on where you go.

Tortola, BVI was nice and i felt safe, but in st thomas (too crowded), st maarten/st martin, nassau, i did not want to wander off alone.

I don't know about you, but when I go on vacation I don't want to have to worry about defending myself or my loved ones.

Vacations aren't supposed to be about fear.
