If you had the choice to move to the following states, which would you pick and why?

Live in a city near or in:

Orlando, Florida
Fort Worth, Texas

You poor bastard. Fort Worth. It's drier. You can still drive to the beach and you can drive to the Guadeloupes or Big Bend. No matter which way you drive from Orlando there is a whole lot of Florida and when you get done driving through that you are still in god forsaken nowhere.

TX, better for TV viewing of sports and you have nearby pro teams. The only thing you'd really be losing out on is possibly somewhat milder weather and access to the ocean/water.

Wife, kids, hobbbies?

I'm single.
Hobbies are, software development, biking, skating, and volleyball (haven't played in a while, its hard to find people who are really good). I'm up for doing whats fun in the area I'm at. Like motorcycle riding if in texas or surfing if in orlando.

Fuck...if those are my only choices...just kill me now.

I can't imagine moving to either for anything less than an amount that would also let me live some place else instead...

As much as it pains me... Fort Worth.

A Floridian by birth, I can attest to the fact that the part of the state in which Orlando lies is far more 'boonies' than most people realize.

Fort Worth by a mile.

Texas in general has a much better economy; low cost of living and jobs. There's tons of shit to do in the DFW area (good choice on FtW > Dallas btw).

I lived in Orlando for close to 17 years (1993-2007 & 2009-2011. Orlando is not Disney, keep that in mind. Like all cities there are good and bad things about it. Would I live there again? Perhaps. It's certainly not perfect, but no city is. I'm from Chicago originally.

I can't comment too much on Dallas-Fort Worth-Plano. I was there briefly (very) in 2000 and didn't care for it. Traffic was atrocious. I've never compared the cost of living between the two. I will say that Florida has: no state income tax, no sales tax on several things, no state or county property tax in vehicles, relatively low property taxes. The cost of housing was high 5+ years ago during the bubble but is very reasonable now.

Texas. Fort Worth is much different than Dallas... I've lived in both places and actually prefer FtW, but I'm stuck in north Dallas now.

I like to visit Florida, but I wouldn't want to live there.

This. You might as well make the choices Haiti or Mexico. The choice comes down to the finer points of shittiness that mean fuck all in the overall pile of shit you're standing in.

Really? That's what you really think about Florida and Texas?

This is Orlando, by the way. I can't say I felt the way you do while I was living there.

Looks like an engineered Mecca. A polished veneer to hide the lack of culture, and class. Oh, and mosquitoes.

I live in Orlando and love it. Sure, it's hot and humid from may-oct, but its perfect for the other half of the year. It's at most an hour to great beaches depending on where in the city you live. We have the second largest university in the country and lots of great nature (springs, trails, diving).

You live in a city surrounded by water that a sewer rat wouldn't drink.

Very true. But every picturesque city is graced by water- Boston, SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, Hong Kong, Seoul, Miami, London, you name it. It looks and feels great, and you can do water-related activities too. They take all the stress away no matter how dirty the water is.

Fiancee and I went on a sailboat on Hudson last spring. So so nice.

Also went on a booze cruise for our anniversary. Nothing like being buzzed on a deck overlooking a beautiful citiscape from the water.

Also you can't beat jogging by the waterfront esplanade. So so nice.

I visited Houston and Atlanta. I wanted to kill myself. Nothing but landlocked concrete. A city's gotta have water, man. :)

The scenery is nothing but concrete and buildings.

I lived three summers in north Orlando (Altamonte Springs) away from the attractions, and I lived one summer in south Orlando (near Sand Lake Road and the 4). It wasn't terrible at all.

I spent half my childhood bouncing around islands in Asia, living in the US south, spent junior high and high school in northwest Florida (south Alabama if you look at a map), went to college in the midwest, spent some summers in Arizona and Oregon, and I now live in the Los Angeles area. I leave the country two or three times a year.

I've been places, and I've lived places. Orlando wasn't bad at all... and north Orlando was completely different than south Orlando. I expect that you'll do fine in either Texas or Florida. If Florida, I think that Orlando is a good place to be.
