FX60 @2.9, Asus A8N SLI Deluxe, Evga 8800 GTS.
What would be the equivalent current Intel CPU and Motherboard.
In English, what is my upgrade path, what motherboard and CPU would
you recommend I buy for a modest ( non extreme version ) upgrade.
Core2 dual and quad cpu's have been tops for a while now so if I went
Intel what would I buy to match and pass what I have now. Case, PS, drives,
monitor all good stuff to use im the new PC.

you're perfectly fine where you are right now. Same time next year I'd upgrade your CPU. You won't really need to but if you always want the best, you should at least do it for a nice performance percentage boost -- not 10 -15%

Well, lets see, your video card is still good. Take an Antec 900 case, Fortron 700 wat PSU, Q6600 Intel proc (OC'ed to 3.2 or more) 4 gig memory, ASUS P5K deluxe mobo. Drives are probably all fine. I got most of that just now, and am happy as a clam.

Edit: A Q6600@ 3.2 is probably 40% better than an FX-60@2.9 even in 2 threads. In 4, it kills it.

Well, you're moving from a beast of a system to the best of the current crop, so you must have some $$$ :)

Yeah, just get new PSU, memory, cpu, mobo, and you're set. Look for one of the new stepping (G0?) for the C2Q proc, as they run/oc cooler/farther.

I think FX60 at 2.9 is pretty fast even compare to some of top of the line core 2s, so no point getting a core 2, for a real upgrade you would get a nice Quad core as to weather you get it now or wait until AMD's quad gets released is up to you. But a quad would be your next CPU upgrade. You are essentially fine on the rest of the stuff. As for RAM, the coming future is DDR3 that's 2x2GB capacity. But if cash is no problem is you just want to try something cooler and newer well, here's a setup that you will not be disappointed.

ASUS P5W DH DELUXE
Q6600 (buy it after end of this month drop to like 300) and OC to pass 3 Ghz or QX6800 @2.93
Tuniq Tower 120 or a nicer H2O cooler
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR800 (easily break 1000+)
PCP&C Silencer >700W+ or Silverstone ZF/OP/DA >700W+
8800GTX x2 for SLI
rest your pick.

I guess I forget to say what the rest is. Case: Thermaltake Armor 8000. Big and heavy but nice.
PSU: Enermax Liberty 650w.
Hdd: WD250 sata 2, 16 mg cach. Don't need anything bigger. No DVD movie collections.

What would be the next step up as far as a Core2 procceser. Don't have the $ for a Q6000 anything right now. Dual will work just fine.

Oh, and an Acer 22" monitor. Enough real estate and decent specs.

If you don't have the money for a Q6600 then don't do anything yet. Wait until Q1 08 and let intel and amd continue their little price war. You will be able to pick up a nice quad core system then for a very reasonable price.
