Where in So. Cal are you now?

There's a place on PCH, in Lomita, I think it's called Regal Palace. It's not bad.

Gardena's Empress Pavilion is great.

Chinatown's ABC Seafood right at the edge of chinatown wasn't too shabby.

Some places serve it every day, others only on weekends. I usually go Sunday mornings.

I generally don't order much outside the standard cart fare; mostly dumplings, bao, har gow, shiu mai, et cetera.

It's more fun going with Chinese people. They know the interesting stuff to order. Tripe and chicken feet aren't nearly as bad as they look. ;)

The places with C's on their door and is always crowded have the BEST food. They spend time making food taste good instead of cleaning up the floor, counters, and roaches.

just hit the san gabriel valley (alhambra, montery park) on the weekend and drive around. usually you can see crowds outside of the good ones.
if you're in OC though--slim pickings. found a decent place in westminster. price was average, food was slightly above average, but anything with shrimp sucked. seafood palace i think.

San Gabriel valley is the end-all be-all area for Chinese food. Unfortunately unless you live in Downtown LA or closer, it's a royal pain to get to, which is why I never go there.
