I have been driving in AZ and WI for the past year with a shallow u shaped crack about 2 feet long along the bottom center of my windshield. One of these days I will get it fixed...

FYI, I had a rental car about 3 weeks ago, a 2001 Ford Escort. I went to start it up one morning, when the temp had been 4 deg the night before. I open the back door, get my stuff and close the door. Wouldn't you know the ENTIRE glass back winshield crumbles into a million pieces, into the back seat. Apparently this was probably caused by a crack in a tender spot, according to the Enterprise guy. It's rare, but he has seen it before, he said.

Windshields don't break like the glass on your doors. It is bonded to some sort of layer that will prevent it from shattering. Even if you smashed on it with a hammer all you would have is thousands of little cracks but it wouldn't come apart like door glass will.

Wrong, a volleyball sized round chunk came crashing into the back seat at first, and eventually the rest followed. On the edges on the outside you could still see a bunch of cracks in the glass, but obviously this hadn't fallen through b/c it had nowhere to fall. It was obviously due to me slamming the back door. One of the strangest things I've ever seen... Enterprise guy said it usually happens on Sebring convertibles for some reason, but not on Escorts. Call up the Enterprise in Maple Shade, NJ if you don't believe me.

i dont understand what ur saying? the rear window shattered? rear window is different, windshield glass is reinforced/laminated for drivers protection. its made to prevent ejection of occupants, but flexible enough not to break your head too much. in the early days before safety glass people would get severe glass injuries, and then with poorly designed early safety glass that was too flexible, their heads would pop through the stretching glass, then the hole would contract and off went their head.😛 now u just make a roundish dent🙂 its not ment to keep out bullets and stuff.

rear windows/side are tempered glass, they shatter into tiny peices instead of huge shards that sliceand dice u. its good safety. i've had a rear window shatter over me once in a crash. not a scratch.

Did you even read my post? I said windshields don't break like door glass does. Door glass shatters into a million pieces like you said-I wasn't disagreeing with you. You were posting in response to a thread about a crack in a windshield. I didn't want the original poster to get the idea that his windshield would do the same thing the rear window on your rental car did. It won't. It isn't possible.

That is all...

Yes, I meant rear window, said windshield instead. Yes, it was a bunch of tiny pieces too. 🙂

It probably happens on Sebring Conv. because they are made by Chrysler and Chrysler=Crap. The top probably doesn't line up correctly sometimes and puts too much pressure on the glass and it breaks. That doesn't surprise me one bit actually. Poor design and poor quality control. I've been trying to convince my sister NOT to buy one of these overpriced hunks of junk for a while now. She hasn't yet so maybe it's working.

Yup. That crappy work on the intersection of Miami and Alexandria will appear on my truck, I'm sure of it.

If memory serves me, I think there is a Glass Doctor on Glenwood (70) that isn't far from the park and I think the parking police let them through to a person's car to fix the windshield. I've seen them out there before. (Also, AAA has been there.) And for cracks smaller than a half dollar, I think they use some epoxy resin to seal it instead of replacing the whole glass.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: just read through everything. sorry, it looks like you need a replacement.

durham directory

http://www.diamondtriumph.com says they will not be undersold. I dunno about their workmanship.

It's between Triumph and Harmon, both are roughly the same price 220ish. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone

If I remember correctly, most (if not all) insurance companies in the east coast cover free windshield replacement because of roads condition. Why are you worrying about prices? (unless you don't have insurance, hehe)
