I am going to get a 1.6A but i do not know where is the best place to get one...should i get one for the web some place like newegg? or should i get one for a computer store down the street? if i go to the computer i can look at the at the boxs and see the date and ver (i have look and they are selling DSL668 5/18/02 A82110-003 right now) but i really do not know what is the best date for overclocking....or should i just go with an OEM chip or get on of Ebay?

People seem to be having good luck with 1.6As from newegg, but being able to see the pack date, etc would certainly be an advantage. Check the various 1.6A overclock threads (like the latest newegg 1.6A batch OC results thread) for an idea of what some good pack dates are. I seriously doubt that you'll be able to find an OEM 1.6A, besides the stock cooling is fine.

Well, the one CPU mentioned in the latest newegg batch thread with the 5/18 pack date was a dud, but I wouldn't put too much stock in that as an indicator of all CPUs with that date. I think most people are getting June pack dates from newegg now. If I were you, unless the 1.6As at your local store are really cheap, I'd just order one from newegg.

I JUST got a 1.6a from newegg...came in the mail abouit 3 days ago. IT's from the 5/13/02 pack date, and its an sl668 (doesn't say MALAY on the box anywhere). I'll be installing and oc'ing it later this week, so I'll let you know how well it works. My friend received an identical cpu and he's oc'ing his at 2.2ghz right now with stock cooling, so I'm hoping that mine will perform similarly (if not better with a thermalright ax-478 with an 80mm fan). As far as websites selling these things go, you can't beat newegg's service. As long as you don't crack the cpu housing, they'll take it back and send you a new one...something to keep in mind if you're still tentative. Good luck :)

I have a Maylasia chip and couldn't get higher than 155 fsb stable. It's like CrazySaint said, it just depends. Just buy one, test it, and then you'll know.

I would IMHO recommend that you order one from newegg. I have bought a 1.6A and 1.8A from there in the last 2-3 weeks and they have very current stock. Good prices and service. Been running a comparison on the two chips.

Take a look here!

I had bought a 1.8A from googlegear and did a rma upon receipt.

It had a mfg code from december 2001 and was a version -001.

Ordered from newegg and received version -003 from this year.
