Do you know any golfers that play a lot? Most of them have tons of old balls. A lot of thrift stores have old balls as well. Kmart sells used balls.

Go to driving range, buy a large tub of golf balls to hit, pour golf balls into golf bag, leave, profit? :p

I forgot to mention, that one of the guys I am playing with plays 3-4 times/week and has about 30 or so scratch balls. I figure this may be enough to get me through the first few holes.

If you go through 30 balls on a few holes theres going to be some very seriously pissed off people behind you. :D

Might very well be the case, but we are playing best ball as a team of 4 so I doubt I'll be holding too many people up. Besides, I'd be more scared of being in front of (or more likely to the side) of me. :D

whenever i need golf balls i run to sports authority. i can always find 15 or so brand new golf balls for under $10 no problem. Usually they are Wilson or something.

I'm not good enough at golf to care about what brand heh.

Go out near dusk and walk through the woods at the nearest golf course. You'll find hundreds for free.

Just keep a sharp eye out on the course in wooded areas and water for lost balls. You can probably retrieve enough of those during your round to compensate for any you lose. You could even end up on the plus side once the round is over.

Go to a local course at night, jump in the largest pond and feel around with your feet. When you find one go down and get it. Within a couple of hours you will have hundreds, did this all the time as a kid then sold them back to the proshop for range balls. Of course there are the usual hazards you should look out for (snakes,leeches,turtles,etc...)

Totally depends on the course and the format. If your playing a fairly open course with not many water hazards or wooded areas, and playing a Florida scramble format you could get by with just a few.

If your playing a tough course with many hazards and you intend on playing out every hole (not likely even in a 2man best ball format) you could go through a couple of dozen.
If your buddy gives you 30 you should be good to go, unless you just want to stand there and plunk 10+ at a time into a water hazard

Ask the cart boys at the course if they know where you could get some for cheap. At least one of them probably has a bagful he's collected and will sell for next to nothing. I bought a bag of 36 for $8 from one of the boys at the course last week.

Take a dozen from your friend, and while you're in the bush, keep your eyes peeled. Every round I play I come home with at least half a dozen more balls than I began with. Unfortunately I don't like a lot of them, but my dog loves to play fetch with them.

my neighborhood has a golf course that runs through it, and my backyard is pretty much next to the fairway. sooo i just pick up balls after they bounce off my roof and land in my yard. :)
