I installed Mandrake 8.1 and the only non-GUI editor it came with was VI :( I can't believe it wouldn't come with emacs or pico but whatever. I've been using kate but i need something to edit with over ssh and i hate VI, please help.

Thanks

I would just learn vi and shut up. But you arent me, and I dont expect everyone to enjoy the simplicity of vi, so check gnu.org for emacs. Its there, I just checked on it (along with plenty of other gnu software. And using a little known site, freshmeat.net, I found pico. Just do a quick search there.

pico doesn't actually come on its own, its bundled with Pine. So install pine and you'll be set.

(in case you didn't know, pine's a mail reader like mutt)

emacs works fine without X, xemacs is a spin off of emacs with better X support but even so I'm pretty sure it still has a console only version.

I am not saying that there isn't a non-X version of emacs. But the distros don't come with them by default.
