Just bought the wife a 2009 Hyundai Elantra ( 25K miles on it, ~ 40K miles left on factory warranty) to use as the commuter car for her long commutes. I knew I did not need to pick up the warranty offered at the dealer as that one was junk, but I feel like I should pick up one somewhere. We kept the last Elantra for 10 years and it was pretty reliable.Since we plan a similar route with this one, I wanted to know some opinions on where I should go and what I should look for to be covered while the miles are still relatively low.

the only extended warranties I have seen that re worth are the ones that come from the manufacture. You proabably have to call a Hyundai dealer (or Hyundai themselves) and ask.

Don't. Factory warranty or nothing, don't bother with the others. You've 40k left, ample time to save up the cost of even a major repair and it's unlikely to happen.

Yeah, big +1 here. Anything you pay for would be wasted most likely, and they'll dick you around to no end trying to NOT cover something. Just put back what youd pay for initial cost and then tuck away another 20 a week on top of that for any and all repairs, thats what I do. once a car stops having payments, just tuck away a portion of that (have to recover some of it back to your pocket) into some interest bearing savings account, when the time comes, youll have the money and it wont matter.

I realize you are not ending a payment, but starting one, but still, tucking a little away for repairs is always a good idea, that way you are never caught with your pants down when (and it will be WHEN) it happens.

Yep I have to agree as well, go factory/Maker warranty or go nothing.

Every aftermarket one fails at one point and most get sued before they even pay out that much. Even the last big one that was paying rusty wallace, and runnign TV ads all the time, has been sued and as far as I know is also out.

Also Hyundai's have come a long way. woudl save the money myself and I bet you come out ahead in 3 years. Just keep up with maintaince.
