Using a third party program or script is a hack. I suggest you look up the definition.

I highly recommend you read the official technical how-to on it.

http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

And yes, I am aware that MANY folks mis-use the word on a practically daily basis.

doesn't make it correct. And I believe educating the masses helps wonders.

Now, if the masses don't care, that's certainly their choice. some folks just don't like to
learn.

I never said it made him a hacker, I said it was a hack. Because it is.

why? one reason: the community.

The cs community has been the strongest I've ever encountered (Never played ever crack or WOW).

I do not know how the community is anymore, since I've lost all interest in gaming.

But you didn't play to play, you played to socialize.

the meaning of words change, especially in different contexts. I say go with the flow. words are only symbols for other things after all. if everyone knows what you mean by a specific usage of a word, then it is correct usage imo.

you have a point. However, i originally called him a wanna-be script kiddie. script kiddies
don't hack (ie, code), they apply "hack" applications.

Don't have a clue why you originally tried to correct my words

I corrected you because he's not trying to be a script-kiddie, as you so put it. He just wants some hacks.

Also, I'm an asshole; it's what I do.

sadly, you have a point. unfortunately, when it has such a demeaning term to certain groups, it loses it's meaning to others.

hell, the white hats started calling the black hats "crackers" just to differeniate themselves.

He is interested in applying a hack in an application to modify the course of the programming and compromise some files. If that's not what a script kiddie is, I don't know what is.

PS: I can also be an asshole.

I watched a documentary on the White Hats. That was years ago, and I always wanted to be one.

Without going too far into it, I've already started on my own. Though, those involved weren't always appreciative, but it's understandable.

A nice way to help out is also to join an open source project on source forge.

Or anywhere else for that matter.
