The battery on my old 450SX4 laptop (p4 1.6, 256MB RAM, 30GB HDD, a little over 2 years old) finally bit the dust. I was just digging through gateway's website for a replacement, and found something odd: they listed a secondary battery for sale, but I couldn't find a replacement for the primary battery. Any suggestions?

The secondary battery is probably one that fits in the optical drive's slot. You can get a new battery from here (just verify it's the right voltage etc): http://shop.store.yahoo.com/notebookparts/6500671.html

You can also get a pulled from another laptop from here: http://surpluslaptopparts.com/

Just enter your model number (450sx4) to get the parts list -- the link isnt working. It's only $50 compared to $129 for the other one, but can't guarantee the battery life.

The other option is to send your old battery to this place: http://www.batteryrefill.com/
They'll put new cells in it for $96...but it might be a crap shoot and your battery has to have at least some life left in it (i.e. can turn the computer on for a minute).

thanks for all the info :) The battery in the first link looks right - the part numbers are all correct - but the voltage and mAh ratings are wrong: The one on the site says 14.8V / 4800mAh, the battery from my computer is rated lower - 11.1V and 3800mAh. Haven't looked at the other sites yet.

I would use Pricewatch or Froogle and search by your laptop series. Note: Looking for high capacity battery on Pricewatch yielded a reputable retail that had it for $50+ cheaper. Give it a shot

I wouldn't worry about the millamps....I think millamps denotes capacity...more millampeds...the longer it lasts....
