Where to get a clean image(ISO) of windows 7 home basic?

A friend gave me his license for windows 7 home basic after he just gave up on it, he said he rather go back to windows xp. But of course, the catch was, i didn't get the disk because he had lost it. The key is legit, i know that much for sure, he gave me the whole retail package with the instructional booklets, etc etc. I don't have access to TechNet, nor can i afford to go buy a copy of windows 7 for $100 bucks, and obviously...torrents are illegal . I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction towards getting the clean ISO file. I thought about calling MS, but i'm sure they'd be glad to charge me something even though i have the legit unused key.

Thank you for reading and hope you guys can help me out,

Sebastian

Calling MS may not work, but the effort is free. 🙂

Tel: 877-696-7786

If your friend has all the documentation from his purchase, they may help. They may be more willing to accomodate the request if he calls or if he's with you when you call, just because he may have more answers than you can provide without his help.

Before you call or ask anyone else, make sure you know whether you want the 32 or 64 bit version.

Good luck. 🙂

I'll give him a call later today as he is out of town with his family in Maine so maybe he can call them or we can do it together when he gets back. If anyone can help me out, i need x86 (32-bit) version of W7HB.

But the O.P. likely is not from the U.S. or Canada because Win7 Home Basic isn't sold in those countries and can only be Activated from certain countries.

"Windows 7 Home Basic

Windows 7 Home Basic is available in emerging markets such as Brazil, the People's Republic of China, Colombia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey. [13] It is not available in first world countries including Western and Central Europe, North America, Australia and Saudi Arabia.[13] Some Aero options are excluded along with several new features.[13] Home Basic, along with other editions sold in emerging markets, include geographical activation restriction, which requires users to activate Windows within a certain region or country."

Yes, he bought it in Brazil when he was doing an internship with Petrobras last year, i didn't know it couldn't be used outside of certain countries...Hmm, maybe i might have to stick with W2K for now...at least until i can save up for Home Premium. I'll have to pay MS a call.

I live in the U.S. though.

If you decide to buy it, newegg.com usually sells both 32 and 64 bit versions for less than anywhere else I've found:

Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
$99.99 with free shipping
SKU: N82E16832116752

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
$94.99 with free shipping
SKU: N82E16832116754

When MS introduced it, they had a special offer for students for $30 for your choice of W7 Home Premium or Pro, 32 or 64 bit versions. It was only available to those with .edu e-mail addresses

If you're a student, and you're lucky, maybe they'll make a similar offer when schools reopen this fall. Meanwhile, XP > W2K.

They dropped the price back down to $30. OP, if you have an .edu e-mail or know anybody who does, this would probably be the cheapest way for you to upgrade to Windows 7.

But the edu licensing is only valid for students or faculty so if he's not directly involved with a school in some fashion it'll be illegal so he might as well save the $30 and pirate it anyway.

That depends largely on where you are and what you are "torrenting."

Exactly, Bittorrent is just a protocol and is no more illegal than FTP or SMTP.

Torrent per-se is just another form of exchanging Files.

Unfortunately, over 90% of what is exchanged over torrent is theft of copyrighted material.

Many people are capable of understanding this issue only if they are capable of developing something and it is “snatched” away from them.

Otherwise, it is just of the entitlement feeling that comes with the usual “Border Personality Disorder” blabbering that currently plagues our society.

And 99% of all statistics are made up on the spot to suit whatever point of view the author is endorsing.

There are ways to take a Windows 7 disc (any version) and have it prompt you for the version that you want to install during a clean install...but I'm not sure if I can mention that here or not.

www.mydigitallife.info has all the info you need on finding a clean ISO download of win7. Heck, the various hot deal sites normally have a thread on Win 7 ISO downloads. Nothing illegal about downloading the ISO, no matter how you do it.
