OK, to save you from spending all of this money in the future, just use the 70% swabs. I really doubt it will make any difference whatsover. Trust me, I'm a chemical engineer.

if you really must, buy a 99c alcohol & 99c q-tips
Then use hair-dryer to dry it
buy a 99c hair-dryer if you don't have one

Why the hell did you need swabs?

Leaving celllulose fibers on the processor sure isn't going to help thermal conductivity, either.

Sandpaper. You won't be hurting the heatspreader at all if you do a good job of sanding it down, to perhaps an 800 grit finish.

That's how I would do it. If I were lazy I'd try a razor blade and some rubbing alcohol.

If you were to clean the latest AMD CPUs, what can and can't you touch with the 70% - 99% alcohol wipes?

I'm thinking I put too much AS3 on my 2500+/MCX462+/Vantec Stealth combination and should take it off and lighten the application.

what would the best to clean this then? as you can tell, i have no clue what im doing...
I just use fingernail polish remover(acetone based) and a rolled up piece of paper towel. Blow off any towel dust with compressed air and all good to go.

I clean all my cpus with acetone, or nail polish remover.

For a swab I used an old T-shirt, thats it.

Never had any problems

The only thing you have to worry about is lint, but a good blast from a keyboard duster can will take care of that if your anal. (I just blow on the cpu.)

dont listen to the other fools that are talking about sandpaper and razors, they are trying to get you to scratch the cpu. Never use anything harder than plastic.

Target sells bottles of 91% alcohol for less than $1. I always use an old under shirt for HS and processors and stuff of this nature. The cotton swabs/ Q Tips should work fine wet, but I wouldnt use them to dry things off because they will leave fiber behind.

I'm using a Swiftech MCX462+ and Vantec Stealth fan.

I've built 3 systems in the past two days like this (a friend's, brother's and mine), and mine is running hotter than their systems. I don't expect great results with the weak fans, but we prefer no noise. However, they remain in the 38c - mid 40c range while I, right now, using AIM and internet explorer, am up around 48.5c.

I removed the heatsink, cleaned the processor and applied AS3, then put it back together. I'm very anal and precise when I do this as I find it the trickiest part of computer building, but what am I doing wrong? Shouldn't I have cooler temperatures? Am I just in a hotter part of the house.

I might add, as a makeshift setup, the dual Linksys router setup is on top of my Aluminum case, and I believe the area I'm in where the other two computers have not been is a little hotter.

Just curious, though I know these temperatures aren't dangerous.

why are you changing the heat sink in a dell? those things are very well engineered to NOT overheat.

anyway, a bottle of 91% is $0.50 at my local HEB and the no-name cotton swabs were $1, you're getting ripped off.
