Where to find Windows 7 Gadgets

Lately I've been trying to browse around for some Windows 7 gadgets to do various things but no matter where I search I invariably end up at the following page which is also where you end up if you try to find more using the control panel applet:

Where Microshaft proceeds flip the big middle finger to people who don't want to make the jump to Windows 8.

Who else hosts these now?

What are you looking for? Maybe people can pull them from their systems, and start a repository.

This is all the gadgets from my folder. Some are junk, and some are pretty good. I've also customized some for appearance, so they aren't all default. I haven't used Windows since 2009 or so. I can't guarantee they all work, but you might find something you like.

Specifically I was looking for a Yahoo mail gadget that can show me or play a sound effect when I have new mail without having to minimize what I'm currently in, open a browser window and check which is hassle. I think there is such a gadget, just need to find where I can actually download it from a reliable source and not some shady malware site.

Check this gadget and site. I don't know if it's legit or not, but you can run the downloads through a virus scan, and poke through the code to see if anything bad jumps out at you.

If you Google search you can find some of them, I liked the CPU usage meter myself and had to go searching for it when MS discontinued supporting them.

That's the Apple approach to computing. "You'll do as you're told for your own good". Funny that a company that builds backdoors into it's products is suddenly concerned about the backdoors possibly inserted by others. Gadgets aren't anything special. They're the same as the millions of other packages that can be installed by the user. Every one is a risk, and you have to weigh the risks when installing. If you don't trust the dev, or haven't read the code yourself, you shouldn't install the software.

Just as lxskllr mentioned MS (like Apple) has always taken a stance of shoving change down people's throats whether they want it or not, whether it's better or not and calling it progress/innovation.

Anyway, I find the first sentence of that article pretty much sums it up.

"Rather than fix vulnerabilities with Gadgets and the Sidebar in Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft is advising users to disable the features altogether." Lol, just months before the release of Windows 8.

No doubt they'll take a similiar stance after the next Metro killing interface/whirligig they think of comes along.
