So while disassembling a part of my oil cooler, I ran into this bolt.

Now from the looks of it, it seems quite normal. A bolt, a washer, and a lock washer.

But when I tried to recreate it by buying parts from Home Depot, I discovered that I can't remove the washer because the threads are in the way. This makes me think that the bolt/washer set was put together first and then the threads were created. I asked around Home Depot and none of them had a clue.

Its probably a crush washer. Softer steel made to be used once, and replaced whenever unbolted.

auto parts stores should have it.

You will not find washers on a modern car. They are either made into the bolt head, or are as pictured above.

There's no reason you can't replace them with standard bolts and washers. Other than the maddening frustration of trying to slip stuff into place without various bits of hardware falling apart and rolling across the floor.

Why do you need bolts? Just lose one or something?

If it is a crush washer it was probably holding back fluid... in this case, oil...

If that is the case op, please go to the auto parts store. You can't use a regular washer on that if it was being used as a plug.

Yeah I just searched Orileys and Autozone and they have something similar at least online.

Well the oil cooler that was removed was held together with 4 bolts and 1 of the bolts was shorter than the rest without the lock washer so I guessed that a previous owner lost it and tried to replace it. I was trying to get everything back to a standard.

Well I went to Orilleys and they don't have the full washer and locking part, but their version was too short anyway. I haven't tried the dealer yet, but I did try to look for the part on their parts list and it came up short. No biggie. I'll just use what I was able to put together from HD.

Did you consider your local auto salvage yard ? ? Odds are you can find it there easily (and very cheap) .. find the same car or close year (same make, if you can) and they should be easy to find.
