I'm thinking of putting Linux on my laptop (possibly the new version of Mandrake or Redhat) and want to see if drivers have been made for my Compaq Preario 904 laptop. It's a 1.3Ghz, so it's fairly recent.

Whats the best place to find drivers? Compaq didn't list any Linux drivers on their site.

Search the Web. Many users will post details about linux installations on laptops. Linux on Laptops is also a good place to look, but I didn't see any Presario 900 info there.

Be warned. Laptop installs on Linux can get rather funky. Too much customized, non-standard stuff.

As a general rule drivers for everything under the sun are distributed with linux by default. Only a few companies actually make their own drivers (NVidia and ATI come to mind, and really many people decide not to use them anyway).

FWIW Mandrake 9.0 installed fairly cleanly on my Presario 1500t. I have not yet gotten the four-way navigation button or the internet shortcut keys working yet, nor have i configured APM. But I intend to spend some more effort on it when I have the free time. For now most everything I need is up and running.
