Where to find info on home automation control?

Just for fun I've been looking into home automation. The ideal setup would be a central linux server with various terminals controlling home functions (lighting, HVAC, appliances, sprinkler system, and so on). I have absolutely no idea how that stuff could be controlled via computer. I'm used to normal pipes, plug-in appliances, etc. Anyone have some experience with this stuff?

Ooh thankies, already found several goodies 🙂 So far it kinda looks like I'm better off designing my own hardware and running it via serial or something 😛
