i'm just starting to play with linux, and want to learn a little more about samba. any places that have easy newbie walkthroughs? i figured i'd ask here before searching on my own.

can samba share files on my linux machine to windows machines, as well as browse computers on a windows network? i'm fairly sure it can, but have no clue. i tried fruitlessly, it always tells me bad address etc when trying to configure it.

Here is a good resource: Using Samba

The answers to your questions are yes and yes, and the book at that link spells out clearly how to do it.

It's easiest when you are just getting started if you use Win 98 instead of NT or 2000 for your Windows box(es).

Here is a hint for you:

In the smb.conf file make sure there is a line that says:

encrypt passwords = yes

also make sure that you create an account for yourself on the linux machine (run userconf if you are using redhat) and then login to the windows machine with the same username/password. That will make things easier for you :)

and don't forget to run "smbpasswd -a username" to add your username and password to the samba password list.

I couldn't get samba working all the way correctly when connecting to my win2k box. Win98se was relatively easy.
