The case is pretty urgent. I am looking for a Mandarin interpreter to pick up my mom next Monday morning from home to a hospital in downtown LA for an important health screen. The interpreter needs to translate some messages for my mom in the hospital, who speaks Mandarin only. Overall it will take up to 2 hours 30 minutes. Where in LA can I find such a service?

The hospital is Hollywood Presbyterian Medical, located at 1300 N Vermont Ave Los Angeles, CA.
I am willing to pay $50 for your help, or you can give me your desired rate.

Yeah, if it's a hospital, they should have translators on the ground...especially in LA :p

And unless you find someone to do it personally, $50 won't be even close for 2-3 hours of work, so be prepared to pay more.

Notify the hospital in advance (2-3 days) of the problem.

They will have people that know how to handle the situation.

2 hours of the 2.5 hours will be in driving and waiting, so the actual period for language translation will not exceed for 0.5 hour. Can you give an estimate cost for that?

Cost is usually total time, not just active time.
While the 2 hrs are not in translating, it is a time comittment that should be paid for.

A place that's as ethnically diverse as LA? I would think they would have Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese speakers at the hospital itself, at the very least.

As others have suggested, have you tried talking to the hospital first?

ehhhhhh not really where that hospital is located. there should be one person that speaks chinese in the hospital, but you're more likely to find tagalog or spanish.

monterey park on the other hand, no problem.

How about phoning this Chinese students group at UCLA?

Either there will be willing & interested starving students there who'll want to help you,

or they'll give you a reliable referral.

Couldn't hurt to phone them & ask!

UCLA Rocks!

be prepared to pay upwards of 300-600 dollars maybe more.....

translators can be expensive......
I use to work in a hospital and was often called upon to translate in polish or even russian......but I was glad to do it to help out a family that couldn`t afford a translator!!
