I'm nearing completion of the exterior renovation of my detached one car garage. The roofer contracted out the gutter/downspout installation, passing on that subcontractor's $300 charge to me. He had them attach it with screws so that I could remove it when I repaired the side wall. I went to reattach it the other day and found that the trim I attached on the edge of the Hardie Planking forced the downspout away from the wall. Thus, I figured I had to get a couple of elbows for the downspout assembly that don't extend as far. The difference is about 1.5" (the thickness of the 2x4 I used for the trim). So I go to Home Depot yesterday. They didn't have a great supply of downspout parts. There were some white plastic ones, a white plastic (PVC, I think) thing with an accordion portion in the middle that would work but look kind of weird what with the brown painted aluminum downspout below it. I tried to adapt the elbows on the assembled downspout. I removed the rivets and cut off some of the aluminum and tried to force them back together in such a way that the assembly would fit correctly but the experiment failed.
I figure there's some way to get my downspout looking reasonably professional instead of jury rigged. I bought the accordion style piece later in the day (from another store, Orchard Supply Hardware) because I figured I want the downspout functional with the occasional rains we're getting and installed it in the evening.
When my house roof was done they had a different style of elbow at the top of the downspout and it is aluminum. Something like that would work well if the extension from the wall was the right distance.
I'm in Berkeley, CA. There's a Lowes maybe 20 miles away. It would be a trip. Where can I find a good supply of downspout parts?
