A friend of mine is wanting to purchase my current cpu/mobo/ram(1600+ oced to 1743mhz, MSI KT3 Ultra2, 256mb generic running fastest timings) and I am looking to upgrade, I can only afford around $250 and have been thinking about the Epox HRDA+ from TCWO for $108 and a 1800+ tbred b(but where from?) for ?$ and 256mb Infineon ram from a local dealer for $55. What do you think of my plans and is there anything else I could do? Should I be looking for a 1700+ or would the 1800+ get me a little more? I don't mind spending $20 or so more if I would be better off. I was looking at the 2100+ tbred b from newegg for $95 but that is probably out of my price range.

id probably get either the epox or asus nforce2 board (or kt400 chipset) and a tbred b 1700+ from newegg.com

but you will also need a good heatsink if you want to overclock...slk800 is a good one and from here here its a damn good deal too (unless newegg has it cheaper..you can check there when you check on the board/cpu)

now you need a fan...any fan you want will do on that heatsink

you probably have some thermal paste (especially if you bought as2/as3) so that should be ok....if not buy from heatsinkstore as well with the slk800

Agree on boards, not on just any fan. Why not get an adjustable speed one, with the option of adjusting cfm vs your noise tolerance? Enermax fans from sidewindercomputers or newegg and YS-tech from svc. Adjustable resistor for YS can be mounted in a drilled hole in the case but those of enermax hang loose.

I have some of the Antec silver compound, about the hsf I was looking at the Alpha PAL8045 or the slk-800 and I have a bunch of sunon 80mm(I don't know what cfm/dba they are but they do push quite a bit of air). Well, you guys answered some questions but missed the main one, where can I find the 1800+ tbred b and is it worth it? Is the one at newegg the tbred b? I am definately set on the nforce2 chipset and I like the price of the 8rda+, one question about it though, where is the firewire? It says it has it but I do not see it on any pics or anything, just kinda wondering about that cause I could use it with my vid camera. Thanks for the help guys

They give you a connector that takes up a PCI slot that gives you 2 Firewire ports. The 1800+ Tbred at Newegg is in fact a Tbred B.

Thanks for the info, I'm still wondering if the 1800+ will oc better than the 1700+, any ideas? My goal is to run it at 2ghz preferrably with a 200mhz fsb or higher, will either of these processors do that for me or have a high possibility of it? I have been reading about the mem speed ratio and that it doesn't work correctly except at 100%, 80%, and 50% is that true?

You should be able to hit 2ghz if not higher with adequate cooling with the 1700+ or 1800+. I have not heard of any abnormalities concering mem speed ratio, but running it sync with your FSB should provide optimal performance.

I know it would provide best performance, but I will probably only have enough for pc2700 and it may not hit 200fsb like I hope so I may have to resort to using a ratio. Maybe I will get the 1700+ and use the extra $ on some pc3200, if there won't be that much of a difference in overclock that is...

If you're in need for some cheap PC3500, Kingston HyperX runs about $89 for a 256mb stick at Newegg. Cosair XMS PC3200C2 is only $84 shipped at Googlegear.com.

Not all 1700 Thoroughbreds from NewEgg are "B"'s! I received an "A" this Friday, was ordered last weekend.

Although not as fast as the "B"s, it will, however OC very nicely. Mine is running at 1.92Ghz, and passed 24 hours of Prime95 at that speed. Temps are 4-5 degrees cooler than my old XP1600 AGOIA, still awaiting the arrival of an SLK-800 HS to put on it. My present HS is a Coolermaster HHC-001 with an 80MM fan, which is working very well! (38C idle - 43C max during Prime 95)

I have an HHC-001 and an HCC-002. These things are dirt cheap and perform great (i used the HCC-002 on a tbred A running 166X12.5 at 30 idle 39 load; of course, I always have the windows open so the room temp was 20c :) ).
I have the problem where I need noise when I sleep. I have always used a fan. Since my pc is on 24/7 and the case is flat and open, I no longer need a fan. That is the only down-side to the HHC-001 and HCC-002, but I do not mind the noise.

Hey you guys,

I am using this "Galaxy" cooler that I got from nexfan.com for $6. It is huge. I am oc my xp1700 Throughbred B (1.47) at 1.6gig (my pc133 memory limitations), and the temperature is usually idle around 32-35 degree Celsius. Right now, my PC Alert4 program tells me 27degrees Celsius. I think the model number is GC118 or something like that. Check it out. Oh, by the way, if you order from nexfan.com, ask them to ship it out at actual cost. I've ordered from them twice, and I am happy both times. You can also get Galaxy ball-bearing case fans for, I think, $1.75 each.

The Galaxy fan you are talking about is non-copper and probably does not enable a lot of overclocking headroom. I am sure it is fine at the speed you are running it at, but you really need a copper HS for pushing the vcore. I would advise you to not try pushing up the vcore on the CPU with that HSF; you might end up killing your CPU.

k..I sold my stuff now I just need to order everything. I am going to get the 1800+ from newegg $64, Epox 8rda+ from? newegg is said to get them tomorrow(monday) or mwave(are they any good?), pc2700 locally(might even splurge and get pc3200, but if the 2700 doesn't work it will be under warranty and they allow exchanges or cash back), I still can't find a good heatsink for a decent price...I don't mind spending $25 or so but I don't want to have to deal with $12 shipping on top of that, I'll probably just go for a local stores copper heatsink for the time being for $23 it's this one...here...any ideas and is there anything else I need to know about this mobo and getting it up and running? Must order soon, hehe!!

Thanks for your comment Kingoffah. I'll keep that in mind. Hey, Necrolezbeast, I have only heard good things about mwave.com. I also hear that mobos are cheaper there than at Newegg. I've been a good customer of Newegg, but I don't think it is as good of a vendor as it used to be. I think they are making too much money. I'm not sure if I want to order from them anymore.

Why not order the SLK-800 for $5 more from SVC?

because I was only supposed to spend $20 on a heatsink and I overshot it anyway...hehe, didn't want to dig myself a really big hole. Also for the 2-day shipping at SVC it would had ended up costing me $40 for the slk-800, way too much compared to the original plan.
