Where To Connect ESD Wrist Strap?

I used to connect it to a metal surface which is touching the ground or the house heating radiator,
Is that wrong?

That is right.

Connect the grounding wrist strap to a (preferably unpainted) section of your case that you're working on. The point is to be at equal potential with your case / build, not that you have to be at earth ground. Likewise, you should NOT plug the PSU in, "to ground you". Totally unnecessary, and dangerous.
