Where to buy quality wood?

I want to do a little wood project, and I need some quality wood. For example, if you wanted to do a chess board - the dark color would be cherry, and the white color - maple. Where could one buy quality wood of different kind?

Home Depot sells only construction grade stuff, but that's not it. I need some wood for delicate work.

Thanks.

paulney, have you tried the Yellow Pages in CA?

I'd say this is u're best bet.

I saw some stuff at Gilroy Garlic Festival today (it's not jsut garlic, more like arts and crafts fair, too), and I want to do some stuff myself. A game table, for example, with scwitchable boards - for chess, tic-tac-toe, reversi, etc.

For some reason, Yellow Pages didn't occur to me. I'll cehck those out, thanks.

If you want to find some good lumber, contact a local cabinet shop. They should be able to sell you enough nice wood for your projects. Avoid H.D. - they don't really have any cabinet-grade materials for doing such a project. Cabinet shops should also have some exotics such as bamboo, too.

What the hell are you talking about? Home Depot and Lowes both carry maple and cherry in 1x stock up to 5 1/4 wide at all stores. Up to 11 1/4 wide at HD in specific locations. (Larger type 5 stores, 180k sq/ft and bigger) Don't go to the construction 2x lumber area. Go to the millwork area, usually the same isle as the trimwork. It is sold by the foot, and comes random length up to 16' (17' on a few of the smaller sizes)

Trust me, I know 🙂

Home Depot does carry some S4S hardwoods ... I've only seen Oak, Maple, and Poplar there though ... never cherry. But it is very expensive relative to what you can get S2S from a specialty lumber yard. Check the yellow pages.

My HD carried cherry up to 5 1/4. some of the smaller stores may only have it up to 1x3. AFAIK all stores have it unless they changed since I left, or a manager dropped it.

Home Depot sells that wood. Back of the store, near the stair railings and risers. Oak, Maple, Cherry, etc.

I don't know exactly how close to Gilroy you are, or in what direction, but San Lorenzo Lumber will have what you're looking for. (They have stores in Salinas and Santa Cruz)
