Wife needs a pair, but would not like to spend the $600 that her glasses cost.
Are there good, inexpensive shops online? [as in, not owned by Luxotica].

Zenni Optical
Been buying glasses from them for over a decade, for myself and the kids.

Absolutely this
Costco, BJs, Walmart are the go to places around here.
Better quality on the lenses and much cheaper prices.
Where years ago a new frame and lenses would hit 400+ (and within 15 months the coatings are peeling and a its a scratchy mess) now I usually get both regular glasses and sunglasses for 250-350.
I still have my old glasses as backup thanks to the quality job on the lenses.

Getting the hookup on both normal and sunglasses with prescription is what I'm going to miss about my wife not working in that industry anymore. I have 3 nice pairs of prescription sunglasses.

Prescription sunglasses with polarization was a complete game changer while hanging out at the beach.

In my experience its the lenses that cost the most so the maker of the frames is a bit irrelevant.

Mind you that might be because my eyes are old and crap now.

Can't say it would be the best cost, but you could try a local small optician. The last time I got glasses (both non-prescription sunglasses, and prescription regular glasses), I managed to get frames from smaller, independent brands, and supported an independent local business too.

Plus, the frames have been quite durable - going on 6 years now.

They cost more than Zenni but offer an option to send in your own frames to be made into RX. They also have a better warranty.

Coastal is also very good and offers designer-frames.

Yeah I love my prescription polarized ray-bans for when I don't wear contacts, and my regular ray-bans when I have contacts in. I'm like Joe Biden with aviators. But they sure are fucking pricey.
