I have extra wide feet and I hate to buy shoes. In fact, I have not bought a pair of shoes in 2-3 years. I can walk into a shoe store and find nothing that feels good on my feet. One time I had a job that required steel toe shoes and I couldn't find any that felt OK. I settled for non-steel toed.

However, I have found that New Balance 11 4E always fit me. Therefore, that's pretty much all I will buy. I used to go to a local sporting goods store, but they were pretty expensive (like 80 bucks). I found some good deals at big sporting goods stores (I'm in Berkeley, CA) in the vicinity, (like 2 pairs for $80), but usually they don't have 4E. I think they make 6E, but I've never seen them in stores, so I haven't had a chance to find out how they fit. I have foot problems... specifically, I had foot surgery 2 years ago on my left foot (removed two Morton's neuromas!), so comfortable shoes are a must.

About 3 years ago I bought New Balance golf shoes (11 4E) online. Couldn't find any to try on in local stores!

I want some high top basketball shoes. I'm going to bolt skate trucks to them. Where can I find these in New Balance 4E where I don't have to pay a premium? Thanks for suggestions/ideas.

Most shoe companies suck for wide shoes. Adidas is the worst, with Nike a close second. If you have trouble finding NB, Avia is also a good choice.

New Balance sells different "grades" of shoes. The " 500 and 600" series (and maybe 700 & 800) you find in MOST retailers, and the "900" series you find in better shoe stores. There IS a huge difference...in build quality as well as comfort. You can often get the cheaper quality shoes on sale, but the "900's" are rarely on sale and will set you back $100 or more.
I generally wear the better quality shoes because I'm a big guy and the cheaper ones just don't hold up for me...and my weight..:D

Thanks for this info! Very interesting and I had no idea. Since I'm going to the trouble to make skates out of these shoes (including sewing big pieces of velcro on them) I'm going to get 900's. Now to find them...

Edit: All the New Balance basketball shoes I see at zappo.com are BB888.

with 4e shoes, you get what you pay for. the only cheap 4e shoe that i thought was decent was Avia ($35). Lasted me a whole 2 years. Kohls has some 4e shoes as does DSW (although they have been scaling back). Dicks has a small amount of them. Any place that sells Brooks shoes would have them too.

Going to New Balance's website I'm finding that their basketball shoes' widest width is 2E! I want to get uppers for my skates that I know are going to fit, be safe and last. Hmm...

Edit: Zappo has NB BB shoes in 4E's, the NB888's.

I googled new balance basketball shoes and turned up two different in the 900 series. 902 and 904. Couldn't find bigger than 2E in the 904, but found BB902 11 4E's for $94.45, shipped, from Shoebuy.com. They had all positive reviews (also at Amazon, but no free shipping there). I confirmed the order. Yippee! I got the White and Red... I figure loud is good when you are skating down the sidewalk or street. :D I'm going to sew thick velcro at the top 2" of each shoe, to make them easy to get on and off quickly. Unless, they have those cool lace hooks, that is, but I'm not counting on it. Even so, once that velcro is there, it makes it a snap to put them on and take them off in a hurry, always nice.

For getting shoes in 4E sizes at a B&M I use Rogan's. They are the only place I have ever found that carried that size.

OP, you have a few nordstroms stores in your area?
I buy two or three pair fo the 600's every time they go on sale, and nordstroms has a huge stock of sizes. I wear the quad E also:)

There are Nordstroms, though not in the immediate vicinity. I think in S.F. I make it over there occasionslly... Great info, folks, and as I need more shoes I'll check out these ideas. All my shoes in the last 6-7 years (maybe more) have been New Balance 11 4E. For these particular shoes I wanted high tops because they will be made into skates and some insurance against a turned ankle seems worth it. AFAIK, that means basketball shoes. BoomerD's recommendation to get series 900 seems smart, especially for a skate shoe while will likely be used as such for years and years.

Mine are daily wearers, and I trash the hell out of them. I have varying levels of shoe cleanliness, new ones for the town, to trashed ones for the yard and truck driving.
That's why I go for the 600 series on sale. I'd kill any shoe in the same amount of time. I'm bad that way:p

Hey, I'm the same way except that I don't wear new shoes around town, just OK shoes. New are for special occasions. Trashers are for the tough stuff around the house. I could probably count 6 or so pairs of New Balance 11 4E's around here. One is new, 3 are OK, 2-3 are kind of beat up. Occasionally I toss them in the washing machine.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for sales for them. It's a bit rough because I usually find they don't have my size. I guess I could get them on the phone.

If you can't get new balances then I would try Nike. Nikes usually are a bit wider then the Adidas. Depending on the model. I have wider feet also. What I do is buy a pair and wear them around the house for a few days to see if they break in a little, if they don't i take em back.
