I want to buy an extra power cord for my laptop so when i use it at home i can just plus it back it without having to take it out of my bag and then move the desk to get to the plug etc.

Ive heard they sell universal ones with just different tips for different laptops, is this a good idea?

Or am i better off just getting one off ebay thats just for my laptop? what information should i be looking for to make sure i buy the right one?

I guess getting one made specifically for your model would be the ideal. If you get something with too little power it won't run right, if at all, and if you get one that puts out too much power you'll fry it. My advice would be to play it safe and get the one made for your laptop if you can.

Your idea is good - it's what I do. I leave my original OEM adapter at home, plugged in, and velcroed in place. I have another just for travel, and it includes auto accessory adapter, airline adapter. That stays in my travel case.

I got the travel adapter from my laptop OEM, but would use E-Bay if price were an objective. Targus also has a good universal travel adapter that meets the specs of most laptops. Those are available at any good on line store or local Office Depot, Staples, Best Buy, etc.
