Alright, so i am gonna move into my own place in August and as you can all guess, I am pretty excited about it :D Since this is going to be the first time that I am going to be living by myself (roommates for the last 3 years), I was curious what places would be good to look for furniture? I am especially worried about living room furniture, because I already got a bed and desk for my bedroom, but need some advice on living room furniture. Any good online places? (probably not..) or any place that is decent and not try to rip you off around VA / NC / WV or D.C.? There is an IKEA close to D.C. but I would like to know my alternatives :) Thanks a lot!

i've been in your position enough times... save your time and sanity and succumb to ikea. you know they have what you need for super cheap, and new, too. i tried doing it your way, and if i had to do it again i'd just go ikea from the beginning.

Sadler's Furniture, I think that is nationwide....

You could also get some stuff from Pier 1.

If you're looking to buy a large amount of furniture, I highly suggest going to the furniture region of North Carolina. Most furniture manufacturers in the US are based there (High Point NC -- right outside of Greensboro).

I bought an entire room of furniture and saved approx 40% of what I would have paid here at a local Macy's. The same brand names you can get down there for cheaper (Stanley, Broyhill, etc). Plus there is no sales tax. You do have to pay shipping though.

The name of the place we used was Furniture Land South. There are many others in the High Point area -- do a Google and see what else is there.

Ikea furniture is really crappy -- it falls apart after a few years and is made of all particle board. If you want quality stuff then I highly suggest going to North Carolina.

Big Lots Furniture store
Its funny there is a Big Sandy and Big Lots almost right beside each other here and they both have a lot of the same stuff with the only difference being Big Sandy charges about 25%-50% more. You can pick up some pretty decent couches at BL for $299-$399. Some of my stuff came from yard sales the rest came from family/friends that were upgrading or moving.

Don't discount the paper and garage sales. My sister bought a dining room set from a grarage sales. It did not look that great but she had an expert redo them.

She paid maybe 150 for her dinning room set. Guy said it was of excellent quality and was equial to a 6000 dollar set. :Q

Most modern cheap furniture is well cheap. You can get some great quality in used stuff. Just because it looks old so what.

YGPM

Actually High Point is where the Furniture Market is held. There is some furniture made and sold there but Broyhill, Kincaid, and Bernhardt just opened up a brand new Manufacturers Outlet on Hwy 321N just across the lake from Hickory in Caldwell Co. Thomasville has an outlet about 7-8 miles north of that still on 321 in Hudson.
There is also a gigantic furniture outlet in Hickory in the old Catawba Mall just off 321 on Hwy 70 that has about 10 different outlets carrying just about any brand you could want.

I don't know why so many people think IKEA is so great. I go there and their stuff is pretty damn expensive. The stuff thats affordable looks "kinda" modern but the quality is generally crap. You could get much better at a smaller local store. If you guys pay the price they have on the unit, you're getting ripped off. Just haggle.

Other then that, I'm moving in with my GF in September so I'm buying living room/kitchen furniture. Lucky one of my friend's parents own a store called American Home Furniture Galleries.

Pretty much the only furniture I've bought new have been bookcases, just because bookcases are so hard to find used, whereas it was relatively easy to pick up a few dozen matching bookcases at American Furniture Warehouse. (They have oak bookcases with shelves made from plywood rather than particle board.) Oh, yeah; I do have a couple of l-shaped computer worktables, too, but they were cheap.

I've bought lots of stuff from garage sales and individuals who advertised in the paper; it's a whole lot easier to find decent-looking and well-made furniture used than it is to find it new. One thing about garage sales is knowing where to look; there's a lot of variation in the kinds of deals you'll get depending on the neighborhood.

My parents went to North Carolina to buy furniture and saved almost $10,000. With shipping, they saved about 50%.
