where to buy foreign OS?

Build it Myself

I'm looking for a chinese OS, preferably vista but xp is good too that i can put on the computer i am going to build for her. i want oem if i can find it. i've googled and all i can find are like $300 versions of it which is rediculous. I should've bought the pirated copy when i was in shanghai 😉 but i figured i could find something, but instead i'm at a loss. i can't see paying more than like $80 for an xp version or $100 for Vista because the retail vista basic in china *legal version* is only $66. is there somewhere i can order it for this price?

Thanks,

John

I don't know your reason for needing the Chinese version, but from what I am told the language packs for Vista are modular and can be changed at any time. So unless there is something different about the Chinese version of Vista, the one bought from any etailer can be changed to a Chinese text UI.

Vista HP OEM is about $110 last time I checked (Eng).

With Vista, go to Windows Update - and then look at the optional language packs. If you have a legit Vista, they are free including Chinese. It may only apply to Vista Ultimate.

the reason i want another os in chinese is because she is chinese and that's what she's got on her laptop...it's completely in chinese, there is nothing in english whether it be the folders or the writing or anything, it is easier for her to use.

corkyg, i have 64bit home premium, alas microsoft in all it's wisdom has decided that the money i spent wasn't good enough to get language packs, and they never mentioned it until after i had my copy in hand.

anyone else? i'm looking to find it if i can...

Yeah, the language packs are only for Vista: "Windows Vista Ultimate Language Packs"

The Vista Language Packs are intended for users to dynamically change languages as they travel and is a Vista Ultimate/Enterprise feature.

You can perform an upgrade to Vista Ultimate from Vista Home Basic for around $199.

I use Vista Ultimate, my user account is english and my wife's user account is completely korean. Download, install and apply the Chinese language pack .. works great.

It really does work well. We have a client that is a Japanese company and they switch between languages quite often. In XP it sucked, Vista it is great. It was a pain though because they bought a bunch of terrible cheapo laptops wtih Home Basic, had to convince them to spring for Ultimate.
