I go to a sheetmetal company and buy their remnants left over from customer projects. These days it isn't exaclty cheap but it is cheaper this way.

Commodity prices are high. Go for iron if you want cheap. Chrome/400 series stainless steel (has no nickel in it) after that. Aluminum and 300 series stainless steel will cost you a lot more.

Go to a sheet metal company and offer to buy their scrap. Try to buy it by the pound if you can. Chrome is going for about 16 cents a pound. Iron is probably about 10 cents. You'll never get it that cheap but you can at least get a sense of where you're at. If they charge you 100x that you know you can find it cheaper.

you might also try googling your area for things like

"industrial material supply"

I know a good place in in ann arbor, MI, if that helps. they had aircraft aluminum, everything.
