I need to buy a small quantity (~250) business cards for myself, where do you guys/gals that get them custom made acquire them from? I was looking at FedEx, but thought I'd see what people's opinions are.

There are these stores called printers. The best are local non-chain businesses. Some even have an online presence.

That may be true but VistaPrint has good stuff and can be had for FREE at times, especially if you luck into a coupon or deal that's posted on sites like SlickDeals.

Prices at local places are a joke. Especially for lower volumes.

What's the deal Vistaprint keeps doing? 500 for $10, I think? I got some of those awhile ago. Took about two weeks because I didn't upgrade the shipping/processing (like another ten bucks or less and you go to the head of the line, basically).

Quality is quite good. Stock is of a decent weight, printing is good.

While I waited, I laid out a page of business cards in photoshop with cut lines in the margins. You can fit 12 on a standard sheet of paper. Then go buy cardstock for like ten cents a page and DIY print them at FedEx (or at home/work, if you have a printer that won't fold the paper). Slice them up with a good paper cutter and you can enjoy your ~3 cent a piece business cards while you wait on Vistaprint.

Buy business cards? Unless you're in sales or something they're pointless. My work provides to me and there's probably still 497 of the 500 left in the box from 3 years ago.

Service industries benefit a lot from them, too. In my line of work (auto mechanic), they're good for getting your info out there for side work, or if you're just self-employed (what I'm doing right now). Basically any kind of work where people often want a recommendation and not just a random person: you need cards.

Also I just use them to give out personal info if needed. Saves having to put someone into your phone on the spot. For them. It would be nice if everyone else had cards, dammit.

I've heard good things about vistaprint. My work will make them for you for free but then again when do you see developers handing out business cards especially if they have company logo on them. I guess at interviews they could be helpful If you are interviewing within the firm.

Print them at home with a DeskJet printer and MS Word. Be sure to use plenty of clip-art. :awe:

In case anyone actually wants to try printing their own: again, I cannot stress enough how awesome FedEx Office (aka Kinko's) can be. IIRC: $0.10 for a sheet of decent cardstock, $0.25 for a color print, free use of paper cutting thingamajigger.

You can do 250 cards for like seven bucks, if you've got the time and patience. The Vistaprint thing is 250 for $10 (I incorrectly said 500 earlier).

But if you just need a few cards to keep on hand, the FedEx thing works good. For 10 bucks, though...Vistaprint. Just make sure your design is high res and fairly simple.
