Hi all,

Me and some of my friends are going to get some airsoft guns and we were wondering where to get the best deals? We don't have a whole lot of money so we were going to start out with pistols, probably spring. For you that have airsoft guns, where do you make your purchases from? This is for the US btw.

Thanks for any replies. Also, any tips for those just starting out?

Lets say I wanted to buy a shotty... I've seen them run from $40 buck to $210. Why the large price range? And would I be ok with buying the cheap one or is it pretty much a POS and I should just save up for the more expenseive ones?

Well the cheap ones you just dump BBs into the holder. Pump action will be a lot of plastic bending and crunching. 1-3 BBs per shot. With something like a Marui (Maruzen makes some awesome Gas shotguns. A blast to shoot) the action is crisp and it doesn't feel like you are breaking it. You use shells which holds the BB's, and always get 3 BB's out (if it's working right :p). Always make a little triangle. Kinda like comparing a Kia to a Toyota. They both get the job done, one just does it better :)

I've ordered from Shorty and didn't have a problem. That's probably a San Deng or something like that (can't remember exactly how it's spelled). I've never played with one, but I think you'd be really disappointed with it :(

Airsoft Atlanta has some HFC and KJ Works pistols which are under $80. They are actually pretty good, considering the price. If it were me I'd save up and get one of those. I really think you'll find that shotgun is a piece of crap and will be kinda miffed at pissing away $40. But then again it may work really well. Just going by what I've seen. In airsoft, you almost always get what you pay for.

Alright. I guess when it looks too good to be true, it probably is :(

2 more questions, if you don't mind:

1. What is the difference between electric, gas, and spring. I know the basic difference of cource (not that stupid ;)). I'm more interested in how they feel, or what you consider better.

2. I'm seeing a lot of different company brands (Maruzen, Tokyo Mauri, etc.). Are there some good brands to buy from and some we should stay away from?

Thanks.

Costwise, from highest to lowest, it's Electric, Gas, spring, with a few exceptions. Electric (also called AEGs) are the most common high end gun, they have pretty good quality, and run off battery and motor, etc, etc, etc. If you see someone with an m4 or mp5 it's more likely to be electric. You can fire a crapload of pellets without recharging, and if your battery dies, you just switch it. And, it is full automatic, or semi auto. Most Gas guns have high quality and the slide blows back after firing, and is semi-automatic much like real guns, with the exception of some full-auto gas SMGs, etc. You have to get gas for it though, and refill it after around 40 rounds, depending on gun. Springers are the lowest end, you have to cock it back after firing each shot, and is probably your best bet if you want to run around a dorm playing real life Counter-Strike. You can pay 100-200 for a nice gas gun and gas, and have a rather realistic piece, or you can pay 20-40 and have a mediocre weapon that is still pretty fun. It's your choice.
this is also a good link for a review on a cheap gas Glock 19

Alright... thanks for the info Bruno and Andy. I think we have enough info to make our purchases.

I thought up one more question. Will customs agents sieze the guns and not deliever them because they look realistic? Is this ever a problem?

Thanks.

The good:

Tokyo Marui
KSC
Maruzen
Tanaka
TOP
Western Arms
Marushin
Sun Project

The OK:
Airsoft Elite
Classic Army
(those 2 can be good, quality control leaves a lot to be desired. these are good bets, but I really don't recommend them unless you know what you are doing)
New MGC
HFC
KJ Works

The crap:
STTI
KWC
UHC
Academy
Y&P

The Elite (the Ferraris of airsoft):
Digicon
Asahi
Sheriff

I'm sure I missed some. Again there are some exceptions. KWC makes a couple of good guns, while Tokyo Marui has some crappy stuff (Sig series comes to mind). Almost all of the good brands are based in Japan. The crap stuff comes from Taiwan. Basically avoid anything from Taiwan (I think Tanaka is out of Taiwan and is the exception).

The TMs are basically the workhorses of airsoft. 90% of players will have a TM. Very simple, very effective, very cost efficient. Parts are easy to get and repairs are easy as most folks know how to repair them.

AEGs use batteries and motors. Usually 600-1000 rounds per minute. Easy to use, very little maintenance. Just charge the battery, fill a mag, and you're good to go. You can go through 10's of thousands of rounds before you'll have major work to do (replacing a motor for example). Some of the guns get more complex like the TOP. There is not case for the parts to fit in, they are physically attached to the gun so they are hard harder to work with.

Gas guns are my favorite. Most fire like real guns. You pull the slide to chamber a round, pull the hammer back, flip the safety, shoot. The slide cycles with each shot, and when you are out the slide catches back. Kick about half as much as a .22 depending on what you use (something like a Digicon will be equivelant to a .22). Just a very fun thing to shoot. Especially the full autos. I'm gonna pick up an M-11 soon, should be a blast. Most pistols are semi-auto (some full) and there are full auto subs like the MP5K from Maruzen, or the Stery TMP. They even make shotguns that are gas, very very cool. There's just something about them. Much more problem prone than AEGs. You get less power in the winter too (colder weather and the gas doesn't expand as much). May have to replace an o-ring eventually. Some autos have a cool down where they lose power if you hold down the trigger to long (magazine gets cold where the gas is stored). Definately the coolest things around.

Springers are pretty much suck. Unless you are getting a sniper rifle like the ASP2 or M40, stay away. Very low power, have to cock it for every shot. Basically junk if it's a pistol. There are some cool rifles though like the sniper ones, and most shotguns are springers. I personally like the gas shotguns, but they are more difficult to keep in good shape. Springers are extremely simple. Anyone can take them apart and put them back together.

Personally, I think the best thing you can do is save up and get a TM AEG (something in the MP5 or M16 series) and a gas pistol like an M9 from one of the other Japanese brands. It'll be soooooo worth it. You get the benefit of pissing bb's at 800 rpm, and the coolness of a gas pistol.

If the gun is already in the US, there is almost 0 chance of seizure. To get them in the US the trademarks have to be removed (usually restorable) and the barrells have to be painted orange. Someone that doesn't know much about the law may seize them, but are usually released (just a hassle). Even if they come from US retailers they will have the orange barrel. Probably best that you leave it on...but it can be removed with nail polish remover (ONLY ON METAL). It'll eat through plastic and you'll be quite unhappy.

I've ordered quite a few things from overseas and nothing has been seized so far. Another good stateside retailer is www.airsoftsupply.com. They fixed my gun when something broke in it. Also, some good sites for reference are www.airsoftzone.com (they have the best airsoft forums) and www.airsoftplayers.com (they have good forums and really good help manuals). Here's a picture of my gun, don't laugh at the sling (I'm getting a new one) and a laser goes in the empty ring in the second picture: Picture 1 and Picture 2. The gun itself is a Tokyo Marui MP5A4 with full metal, flashlight, navy flashhider, 42mm Red Dot Scope and mount, laser, and a 350fps upgrade with a tightbore barrel. Airsoft is really fun, hope you get into it. Later.

You can't link from WGC :(

What were you pointing to? The TM M9? It's a good field pistol. Not perfect like the WA version.

Doh, didn't realize.

The WA seemed a little out of my price range for the moment. (all around 200 bucks), so I linked to the KSC M92 Elite (cost $115).

This any good?

ah, don't say springers suck. I have a UHC HW m92f.. it's a very nice spring gun for only a ~$25/30 investment.. especially if you can't really go out anywhere and playl for real. Altho, i'd like to get a gas one.. i can't dunk the cash into it anytime soon.

If you're just getting into the game and want a quick fix for your airsofting desire, a springer will do you well. I was fortunate enough to use my roommate's uzi and a friend's AK47 when I was just starting, and that got me into the game and created the desire to buy an AEG. The more you get into it, the more you'll want an AEG, that's just how it goes. I have a G3 SBS now, used to own a G3 SG/1 but it was too powerful. I also have two KWC GBBs (Bruno, I have to say that most KWC GBBs are crap, but the Desert Eagles rock) which are Desert Eagle replicas. If you want some good info on the game itself, check out Airsoft Zone forums, and I'd go with one of the retailers that Bruno recommended. For KWC stuff, go to airsoftpaintballs.com, but don't expect to get your stuff for a few weeks, and don't expect a reply from them on a order status request. Good luck in your purchase - if you have any questions, PM me and I'll be glad to help. :)
